Defense fuels 76-53 home win

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Freshman forward #Eric Dummermuth# scored 23 points, and Notre Dame won for the fourth consecutive time, as the Falcons topped Malone, 76-53, on Tuesday.

Notre Dame (14-5, 3-0) remained unbeaten in league play with the win; the Falcons are now 3-0 in American Mideast Conference (AMC) games. The Falcons shot and rebounded well and played a near-flawless second half in snapping a two-game winning streak for Malone (5-13, 1-1)

Dummermuth scored 23 on 9-of-16 shooting. The 6-foot-6 forward also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior forward #Dan Jones# and freshman guard #Nick McCartney# each added 14 points. Jones chipped in five assists and five steals on the night.

In the opening half, a trey by Jones at 13:51 gave the NDC a 14-7 lead. The Pioneers bounced back with a 15-7 run to take a 22-21 lead at the nine-minute mark.

The Falcons then returned fire by scoring 10 straight points. Eric Dummermuth fueled that run with three field goals. The Falcon freshman would go 7-of-9 from the field in tallying 17 first-half points. Notre Dame took a 33-28 lead into halftime, with the Falcons shooting 50.0 percent (13-for-26) from the field.

In the second, the Falcons continued to shoot well while dominating on the boards. A 3-pointer by Jones at 15:53 put the Falcons up by11 (44-33). That bucket was the start of a 21-11 run for the Blue & White, which effectively put the game out of reach by the eight-minute mark.

NDC drilled six treys in the second period, and the Pioneers couldn't mount a comeback, going just 10-of-28 from the field and 1-of-5 from the foul line.   For the game, MU was led by guard Jeremy Duerr, who scored 10 points.

“Our defense really came through in the second half,” said NDC head coach Kevin Bille. “That was a really good 20 minutes for us.”

Notre Dame finished with a 50.0 percent (28-for-56) mark from the field and a 47.1 (8-for-17) mark from beyond the arc. The Falcons also out-rebounded MU, 46-28.

The Falcons are now 3-5 all-time against Malone, with the three wins coming over the last three meetings between the two teams.

The Falcons' next game is slated for Saturday, when NDC welcomes the Ohio Dominican Panthers. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
