Freshman guard #Nick McCartney# scored a personal season-high 25 points to lead the Blue & White. The 5-foot-7 newcomer drilled five treys in the game. Fellow freshman #Eric Dummermuth# added 18 points and 11 rebounds for Notre Dame (13-5, 2-0), which has now won three straight games and five of their last six.
The game was initially slated to be played on Saturday, but inclement weather and difficult travel conditions forced a postponement to Sunday.
Dummermuth scored eight quick points in the opening minutes of the first half against Northwestern Ohio (8-10, 1-1). The 6-foot-6 forward led NDC to an early 18-8 lead, and the Falcons and Racers played the balance of the half evenly. NDC led UNOH, 37-27, at the break.
In the second half, Dummermuth hit a trey and field goal to give the Falcons a 42-27 lead at 18:53. With UNOH fouling early and often throughout the frame, the Falcons started to pile up trips to the line.
The Racers did go on a second half run to make things interesting, however. Josh Vorst fueled a 15-4 run that brought UNOH to within four (55-51) at the eight-minute mark.
McCartney, though, as he would on several occasions in the game, answered the Racer run with a 3-pointer at 7:43. The Racers would get as close as three points twice later in the half, but a steady diet of Falcon free throws staved off any chance of a comeback for Northwestern Ohio, which had come into Murphy Gymnasium riding a two-game winning streak. For the game, UNOH committed 24 fouls. NDC went 22-for-34 (64.7 percent) at the charity stripe, led by McCartney going 8-of-11. The former Ursuline High School standout also picked up four steals in the game.
For the 40 minutes, Notre Dame shot 54.3 percent (25-for-46) from the field and 50.0 percent (6-for-12) from beyond the arc. The Falcons out-rebounded the Racers by a hefty margin, 35-21.
UNOH was led by Vorst, who scored 23 points. Jason Sarno added 21.
The Falcons will continue their season at home on Tuesday, Jan. 13, when they host Malone. Tipoff against the Pioneers is slated for 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast tape-delay on SportsTime Ohio (STO) at 10 p.m.
