MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Due to field conditions, Notre Dame College and Frostburg State University played in Morgantown. Notre Dame took the lead in the third inning of game one, but Frostburg State won the game, 11-5. In game two, FSU snuck past NDC by a score of 2-0.
Frostburg State put the first run on the board in the bottom of the first inning in game one. With runners on first and third base and two out, Arden Miller stole second and Gracie Nelson stole home. However, on the same play, Miller broke for third base and was thrown out to end the inning.
NDC fought back to take the lead with two runs in the third inning. With one out, sophomore
Lindsay Breuer singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman
Jocelyn Quior. Getting back to the top of the order, senior
Katelyn DeWeese doubled to tie the game at one and junior
Destany Blake singled to score DeWeese.
The Bobcats then added two runs in the bottom of the third and six in the fourth to take a 9-2 lead over the Falcons.
In the top of the fifth inning, NDC closed within four runs. Breuer walked and then DeWeese, Blake and Cipriano hit three consecutive singles. Cipriano's hit scored two runs and then a groundout by freshman
Kaitlyn Mazzocca pushed one more run home to make the score 9-5. But, FSU responded right away with two runs in the bottom half of that inning.
DeWeese and Blake both had two hits in the game to lead NDC.
In the second game, Frostburg had a runner on third base in the bottom of the first inning and Notre Dame had a runner on second base in the top of the third, but the two teams were scoreless after three innings.
An RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead and FSU added one more run in the fifth inning.
Notre Dame did have six hits throughout the game, including two from freshman
Avery Robinson. In the circle, junior
Allison Weilnau pitched well, allowing just two runs, while striking out three in six innings of work.
Notre Dame will be back home on April 10, for a doubleheader against Ashland University. The games are scheduled to begin at 3 and 5 p.m.
