SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College bounced back from a 3-0 loss in game one of a doubleheader with Ashland University and finished the day with an exciting 3-2 walk-off victory in game two, with a two-run single off the bat of freshman
Jocelyn Quior to end the game.
In the first contest of the day, Ashland put three runs on the board over the first three innings. The Eagles scored twice in the first inning and added one more on the third. After the third inning, NDC's pitcher
Grace Fisher settled down and only allowed one more hit the rest of the game. She set AU down in order in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
Freshman
Avery Robinson led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and later moved to third base, but did not reach home.
Hits were tough to come by for NDC in the second game, as well, with Ashland pitching remaining strong.
The Falcons did not record a hit until the fifth inning, however, they did take a 1-0 lead in the first. Senior
Katelyn DeWeese walked to start the frame. Junior
Destany Blake laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner over, but she reached first base on a fielding error and DeWeese went to third. Robinson picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice groundout.
Notre Dame pitcher
Allison Weilnau did all she could to maintain the slim lead for her team. In the third inning, Ashland had runners on first and third, with one out and on a ball hit to second base, junior
Ella Collinsworth threw home to get the runner and NDC would get out of the inning. But, in the top of the fifth, a two-run single put the Eagles ahead, 2-1.
Senior
Meadow Odum led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a triple off the wall in right field, which was the Falcons' first hit. She did not score.
To begin the bottom of the seventh, Collinsworth started the NDC rally with single on a hard hit ball to second base. Junior
Alyssa Wahl sent the ball right back up the middle that glanced off the pitcher and toward third base. The third baseman's throw was off the mark and NDC had runners on first and third base. Pinch-runner
Madison Olszewski did her job by stealing second and then pinch-hitter
Jocelyn Quior sent a ball up the middle into the center field to score both in a walk-off victory.
"We've been talking to the team about the back half of our schedule to believe that we can win every single inning and every game. They've been working really hard in practice so I'm happy that we found a way to win that second game," said head coach
Kelsey Stopp.
Wailnau got the win with a complete game. She struck out a season-high six hitters.
Notre Dame stays home to play West Virginia State, on April 13. The games are scheduled to begin at 12 and 2 p.m.
