SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Saturday, Notre Dame College's
Grace Fisher allowed just one hit in her fifth shutout of the season, helping NDC to a 3-0 victory over West Virginia State University. In game two, the Falcons finished the sweep by posting double-digit runs and 10 hits in a 10-2 win.
Fisher was dominant, on Saturday, and right away struck out the first two batters she faced and then struck out the side in the second inning. Through the first three innings, she had already accumulated seven strikeouts.
Fisher would end the game with 11 K's, racking up double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season. The native of Painesville, Ohio walked one in the first inning and the only hit of the game was a checked swing double that dropped behind third base in the third inning. Those were only two Yellow Jackets that reached base.
"Grace pitched an incredible first game, she had 11 strikeouts" said head coach
Kelsey Stopp. "She was in the zone, hitting her spots."
NDC had trouble getting its own offense going. Aside from one runner reaching third base, Notre Dame did not have many scoring opportunities through the first three innings. With two out in the bottom of the fourth, senior
Meadow Odum pumped some life into the Falcons as she hit a ball that cleared the center field fence for a home run.
Leading 1-0, NDC added on in the fifth inning. Freshman
Jocelyn Quior doubled to right center field and advanced to third on a ground out. Senior
Katelyn DeWeese walked and stole second before junior
Destany Blake drove in one run with a ground out. Then, pinch hitter
Alyssa Wahl sent a single through the left side of the infield to give NDC a 3-0 lead.
That's all Fisher needed, as she ended the game just as she started it, with a swinging strikeout to close the book.
The second contest featured a lot more offense, but NDC's pitcher
Allison Weilnau kept W.Va. State from having a big inning at the plate. She pitched a complete game, allowing two runs, one earned, while striking out five.
"In the second game, our offense turned it on," Stopp explained. "We had a couple big innings and wanted to support Allie [Weilnau], who threw one heck of a game. She was phenomenal."
WVSU scored first in game two, with an RBI single to go ahead 1-0. The score would stay that way until the bottom of the third inning. Quior put down a bunt for a leadoff single and sophomore
Lindsay Breuer moved her over with a sacrifice bunt. DeWeese then hit an RBI double that dropped inside of the left field line. Blake drew a walk and then both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Freshman
Avery Robinson sent another hit into left field, scoring both runners and putting NDC on top, 3-1.
The Yellow Jackets responded right away with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to pull within one run, 3-2. But, Notre Dame added on in the bottom of that frame. Odum led off the fourth with a double and junior
Ella Collinsworth singled. Collinsworth then attempted to steal second and West Virginia State's catcher threw the ball into center field, allowing Odum to score.
Quior then singled to move Collinsworth to third. Again, NDC used its speed to confuse WVSU as Quior took off for second, the throw from the catcher across the diamond allowed Collinsworth to steal home and everyone was safe. Blake had a sacrifice fly and then Robinson drove in her third run of the game to give Notre Dame a 7-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore
Danielle Fick walked, stole second and scored on a single to right field off the bat of Odum. And then in the sixth, senior
Mia Cipriano sent everyone home early with a pinch-hit two-run homer to right center field that hit the top of the fence and hopped over. With the eight-run lead (10-2), the game ended.
Odum had three hits in game one and two more in game two.
Notre Dame will host No. 13 University of Charleston, on April 14, with start times of 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
