Game Recap: Softball |

Notre Dame falls in two games against No. 13 Charleston

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College went up against nationally-ranked University of Charleston, on Sunday, and got on the scoreboard early in both games. Charleston was able to put together big innings late in both games to win 10-1 and 6-1.

After throwing a no-hitter on Saturday, sophomore Grace Fisher was back in the circle on Sunday and struck out the first hitter of the day. After allowing a double, Fisher then set down the next two with strikeouts to end the inning.

NDC had a runner in scoring position right away and did not let the opportunity go to waste. Leadoff hitter Katelyn DeWeese tripled over the left fielder's head in the bottom of the first. Freshman Avery Robinson hit a line drive double into the right center field gap for an RBI and put Notre Dame on top, 1-0.

Charleston did not score in the first four innings of the game and Fisher ran her scoreless inning streak to 15.

UC then put six runs on the board in the fifth inning before adding two in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

In game two, a pair of errors in the first inning helped UC take a 1-0 lead. However, NDC pitcher Allison Weilnau locked in and did not allow another run for the next six innings.

With Weilnau pitching well, again, the offense was able to stay in the game and had the chances to tie or grab a late lead. Senior Meadow Odum led off the bottom of the second inning with a triple that dropped inside the right field line. Three batters later, junior Ella Collinsworth hit a slow rolling groundball to first base for an RBI single to tie the game at one.

NDC had more opportunities, later in the game. In the fifth inning, Collinsworth led off with a ground rule double, but with one out, Charleston made a pitching change and the Falcons did not score.

The game went to extra innings and, in the eighth inning, Charleston put up five runs.

Junior Destany Blake and Collinsworth both had two hits for the Falcons.

Notre Dame will travel to Salem, W.Va. for a doubleheader against Salem University, on April 17. The start times for the two games will be 12 and 2 p.m.
