SALEM, W.Va. – Notre Dame College has six consecutive road games on the schedule this week, and could not have gotten off to a better start. On Wednesday, NDC scored three runs in the fourth inning of game one to win by a score of 4-3. In game two, a seven-run fifth inning gave Notre Dame a 10-1 victory.
Two batters into game one, Notre Dame had a 1-0 lead. Leadoff hitter
Katelyn DeWeese tripled into right field and the next hitter in the lineup, junior
Destany Blake, dropped an RBI single into shallow right field.
In the pitcher's circle, despite giving up a two-run double in the second inning, sophomore
Grace Fisher had seven strikeouts through the first three innings. She had two in the first, three in the second and two more in the third.
Notre Dame took the lead back in the top of the fourth as they strung together six straight hits to begin the frame. Senior
Meadow Odum led off with a single, but was caught stealing. Then, sophomore
Danielle Fick hit a one-out triple and freshman
Jocelyn Quior singled to score the tying run. Junior
Ella Collinsworth singled and pinch-hitter
Mia Cipriano sent two runs home with a double to the right center field wall and NDC led 4-2. DeWeese also singled after the Cipriano double.
Salem added one more run in the fifth inning with an RBI double, but, Fisher allowed just three hits from the third inning until the end of the game.
Fisher got the win with a complete game, while striking out eight. That was her eighth game with at least eight strikeouts.
DeWeese tied her season-high with three hits in the game, while Quior and Collinsworth both had two hits.
The Falcons took an early lead in the second game of the doubleheader. To begin the second inning, Fick and Odum both singled. Fick scored the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout by freshman
Kaitlyn Mazzocca.
Salem tied the game in the bottom of the second, and looked like they would add more. After a single, walk, wild pitch and fielder's choice, runners were on first and third base with a run scored and nobody out. NDC's pitcher
Allison Weilnau dug deep and got out of the inning without allowing another run. She did not allow another run the rest of the game.
The contest remained tied until the fourth inning. Fick drew a walk to begin that frame and Odum reached with a bunt. Both runners moved up on a passed ball. The reliable pinch-hitter Cipriano came through again when she was called upon in game two. Her two-run single gave NDC a 3-1 lead.
The Falcons then put the game away in the fifth. DeWeese walked and pinch-hitter
Alyssa Wahl singled. The first run of the inning scored on a passed ball and the second scored on an error. Odum drove a run home with a triple down the left field line and Mazzocca singled in a fourth run.
Another pinch-hitter, freshman
Kennedy Bray hit an RBi single and then sophomore
Lindsay Breuer got in on the action with a two-run single, giving Notre Dame a 10-1 lead.
Salem did not score in the bottom of the frame and the game ended after five.
Odum tied her season-high with three hits in game two and Breuer had two. Weilnau pitched a complete game and got the win, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out six.
NDC travels to Glenville, W.Va. for a doubleheader against Glenville State, on April 20. The games are scheduled to begin at 1 and 3 p.m.
