Notre Dame and Glenville State battle in two close games

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – In two low-scoring ballgames, Notre Dame College fell twice on the road against Glenville State University. GSU took game one by a score of 5-2 and, despite solid pitching from Allison Weilnau in game two, Glenville State grabbed a 2-1 victory.

To start the day, in game one, the two teams were scoreless through three innings. Both squads did have chances as NDC's leadoff hitter was walked in both the first and second inning. After sophomore pitcher Grace Fisher struck out the side in the first, the Pioneers had a leadoff single in the second and a leadoff double in the third.

The Falcons jumped on the scoreboard in the fourth inning after sophomore Danielle Fick walked and senior Meadow Odum doubled to left field to drive one run home. Freshman Jocelyn Quior placed a single into left field, scoring Odum.

Odum has hit safely in nine of the last ten games and in that span, she has put together three multi-hit games with eight extra-base hits, including two doubles in Saturday's doubleheader.

As the teams headed to the bottom of the fifth, Glenville State still had not scored. But a pair of singles set up the fifth inning for the Pioneers, and GSU's first run scored on an error. The home team grabbed the lead on a three-run home run, later in the inning. A solo home run in the sixth gave Glenville an insurance run and a 5-2 advantage.

Fisher went 5 1/3 innings in game one, striking out seven hitters. Only two of her five runs allowed were earned.

The runs were tough to come by in game two. A Notre Dame error allowed a GSU run to score in the bottom of the first, but then Weilnau locked in and did not allow another run for the next three innings.

Glenville had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the third, as two singles put Pioneers on first and third with nobody out. A wild pitch sailed over the glove of senior Mia Cipriano, but the ball bounced right back to her off the backstop and the Falcons got the runner at third, who was halfway home. After a walk, GSU's hitters flew out and struck out to end the inning.

In the top of the fourth, NDC responded. Freshman Avery Robinson reached first base on a fielder's choice and she moved to second on a single by Cipriano. Fick sent a base hit down the first base line to score the tying run.

An infield single scored the go-ahead run for Glenville State in the fifth inning, but NDC continued to fight. To leadoff the seventh, Odum doubled to left field and she moved over to third on a groundout. With two out, senior Katelyn DeWeese sent a long fly ball into left, but it was caught to end the contest.

Weilnau pitched a complete game, striking out two and allowing two runs, but only one earned run.

Notre Dame will head to Athens, W.Va. to play Concord University, on April 21. The games are scheduled to begin at 12 and 2 p.m.
