NDC’s pitching dominates Wheeling, as Falcons score 15 runs in sweep

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The final weekend of the regular season for Notre Dame College began with two games against Wheeling University, on Friday. The Falcons took care of business by defeating the Cardinals, 7-0, in game one, before taking game two by a score of 8-0, in five innings.

With a sweep of the doubleheader, Notre Dame moved past West Liberty University for third place in the Mountain East Conference North Division.

Prior to the games, Notre Dame recognized all of the non-seniors on the roster as the regular season is nearing its end. And after that celebration, NDC was ready to go. In the bottom of the first inning, senior Katelyn DeWeese led off with a walk and then junior Destany Blake and senior Meadow Odum both singled to load the bases with no outs.

Sophomore Danielle Fick drew a walk to drive in a run, freshman Kaitlyn Mazzocca hit an RBI groundout and freshman Jocelyn Quior sent the ball over the left field fence for a three-run homer to cap a five-run frame.

After that home run, neither team scored until the fifth inning. In the pitcher's circle for Notre Dame, Grace Fisher was masterful. She struck out at least two hitters in five of her six innings of work, including three strikeouts in the second. Fisher ended the game tying her season-high with 12 Ks.

In the bottom of the fifth, DeWeese led off with a single and moved to second on a bunt by Blake. Odum hit an infield single and the Wheeling first baseman misplayed the throw from shortstop and everyone moved up, scoring one run. Later in the inning, Fick got caught in a run down, eventually stealing second, and that allowed freshman Hope Barrett to steal home and put NDC ahead, 7-0.

DeWeese, Blake and Odum, the top three of the NDC order, combined for five hits. Quior's three RBI in a game is a career-high.

In game two, Wheeling had a chance to get on the board first, moving a runner to third base with two out, but NDC's pitcher Allison Weilnau did not allow a run to score. She pitched four innings in the contest, striking out four Cardinals.

In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Avery Robinson was hit by a pitch and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Mazzocca walked and Quior singled to load the bases. Junior Ella Collinsworth grounded out to short, scoring one run, before sophomore Lindsay Breuer dropped a two-run single into right center field. Notre Dame took a 3-0 lead.

NDC then had its second five-run inning of the day, in the third inning. After a pair of walks, Robinson hit an RBI double and Fick knocked in another run with a single. Still with only one out, Quior came through with a two-run double to left field. Collinsworth singled to right and then stole second base before Breuer reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed another run to cross the plate to put the Falcons ahead 8-0.

Senior Madison Olszewski entered to pitch in the fifth inning and struck out two.

Quior went 2-for-2 at the plate in game two and had two more RBI. Breuer's three RBI in the second contest set a career-high.

NDC will play West Liberty, on April 27. The doubleheader start times are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
