SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College entered the weekend with four important games on the schedule against two Mountain East Conference North Division opponents to end the regular season. The Falcons swept Wheeling University on Friday and then swept West Liberty University on Saturday, combining to outscore its opponents 28-3 over the weekend. Versus West Liberty, NDC took game one, 7-0, before winning game two, 6-3.
Prior to the doubleheader, the seniors
Mia Cipriano,
Katelyn DeWeese,
Meadow Odum,
Madison Olszewski and
Chloe Vance were honored.
Like they did on Friday, the Falcons jumped out to a large lead in the first inning. DeWeese led off with a double to center and junior
Destany Blake walked. With two out, and runners on first and third, sophomore
Danielle Fick doubled down the right field line to score the first run. Freshman
Jocelyn Quior then singled back up the middle to plate both runners who were in scoring position. The Falcons held a 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, DeWeese got on base, again, with a bunt and then stole second base. She is already the program leader in career stolen bases, and now has 47.
Notre Dame's pitcher
Grace Fisher had four strikeouts through three innings and reached 169 on the season. She now has the single-season program record. The sophomore picked up the win with a complete game shutout, allowing one hit in the sixth inning with nine strikeouts. It was her second one-hit game of the season.
In the bottom of the fifth, Blake drew a walk to lead off the frame and Odum came up, looking to put down a sacrifice bunt. A bad throw from West Liberty's third baseman went all the way down the right field line and both Blake and Odum came all the way around to score. Freshman
Avery Robinson singled and the Hilltoppers made a pitching change. Fick walked before Quior hit an RBI double and junior
Alyssa Wahl hit a sacrifice fly to right field. NDC led 7-0.
Quior went 3-for-3 in game one and had three RBI. Over the first three games this weekend, she totaled eight RBI. DeWeese had two hits.
The second game began as a pitcher's duel as neither team scored in the first two and a half innings. The Falcons did not get their first hit until the third.
Once NDC got its first hit, the flood gates opened in the third inning. Quior led off with a single, and after a fielder's choice, sophomore
Lindsay Breuer and DeWeese both singled to bring in the first run. With bases loaded, and two out, Fick doubled to right center field, bringing in two runs. Wahl stepped up with a single to plate two more runs and the Falcons led 5-0.
West Liberty did not go away quietly, and scored for the first time all day with a two-run homer in the fourth. That ended a scoreless streak of 22 innings by NDC pitching.
Cipriano hit an RBI single in the sixth inning for a big insurance run, because the Hilltoppers came up in the seventh, scored one run and had the tying run at the plate. But, Notre Dame's Olszewski closed the book and got her third save of the season after pitching the final three innings.
In game two, NDC had nine hits, but no Falcon had more than one hit. Fick and Wahl both had two RBI. Junior
Allison Weilnau started the game in the circle and got the win after pitching four innings. She did not allow an earned run.
With two wins today, NDC secured the three seed in the North Division. The Falcons will head to the Mountain East Conference Tournament in Virginia, next week. They will prepare to play Glenville State, the two seed from the South Division, at 8 p.m. on May 1.
