FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Falcons rallied for eight unanswered runs during game one, however the Notre Dame College baseball team fell to Fairmont State University, 10-9 in 10 innings, followed by 12-3 in the series finale.
Tyler Shadle tied a career-high with three RBI during the extra-inning thriller.
Shadle got the party started in the top of the first inning, jolting a solo home run to center field (1-0).
Fairmont State responded during the home half of the frame, with one run on two hits, as the game was tied 1-1. FSU added five runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning (6-1), before moving in front 7-1 on a home run in the third.
Next, Notre Dame started to chip away with two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning.
Nolan James got the momentum started with a single before coming around to score on
Alexander Jones' RBI double (7-2). During the very next at-bat,
Dylan Wimbs brought Jones in with an RBI single through the left side (7-3).
The Falcons continued to score during the top of the fifth inning, as
Carson Petrecca's lead-off walk turned into a run scored on James' RBI single (7-4).
Resiliently, Notre Dame generated three more runs in the sixth inning to knot the contest at 7-7. Back-to-back singles to lead-off the frame by Jones and Wimbs, allowed the bases to be loaded after Petreccas' hit by pitch. Next, Shadle poked an RBI single through the right side, allowing Jones to score (7-5). Another hit by pitch aided the Falcons run, as
Aaron Miranda produced an RBI (7-6). Lastly,
Jacob Barker tied the game at 7-7 on a sacrifice fly to left field.
NDC continued to roll into extra-innings as the Falcons took the lead during the top of the 10
th inning. Shadle's third RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly, allowed Notre Dame to move in front (8-7). A couple batters later, Barker's RBI single through the right side doubled the NDC advantage to 9-7.
However, despite Notre Dame's rally, Fairmont State posted three runs on three hits during the bottom of the 10
th inning to finish the game 10-9.
On the mound, reliever
Grant Meyer was the reason Notre Dame was able to claw back into the game. The right-hander tossed seven innings in relief, allowing just one run on five hits, to go with four strikeouts and three walks.
As aforementioned, Shadle carried the NDC offense in game one by tying a career-high three RBI. Barker also added multiple RBI (2), as James (3), Barker (2), Shadle (2), Jones (2) and Wimbs (2) touted multiple hits in the contest.
In the second game, FSU jumped on top 7-0 in the first inning.
Caden Gomes got Notre Dame on the board in the top of the second inning with a two-run home run to left field (7-2).
Fairmont State added two runs in the second, and three runs in the fourth to lead 12-2.
Despite the deficit, NDC fought until the final out, as the Falcons scored one run on one hit in the seventh inning.
Damion Legaspe singled to left field before scoring on Miranda's sacrifice fly to right field (12-3).
Another quality relief outing in game two by the NDC bullpen as
Noah Phillips pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless, hit-less baseball, to go with a strikeout and two walks allowed.
Jones, Legaspe and Shadle each went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Gomes added multiple RBI (2).
The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action on Wednesday Apr. 17 at 3 p.m. when the Falcons travel to Walsh University.
