CLERMONT, Fla. – Notre Dame College continues to win games in Florida over spring break, currently riding a four-game winning streak. On Friday, the Falcons defeated Edinboro University, 6-1, and Tiffin University, 3-2.
Both Edinboro and NDC had chances to score in the first two and a half innings, but neither had a runner cross the plate. Notre Dame had a runner on third in the bottom of the first inning and the Fighting Scots loaded the bases in the top of the third.
But, the Falcons struck first by posting four runs in the bottom of the third. Senior
Meadow Odum and freshman
Jocelyn Quior singled and senior
Katelyn DeWeese reached on an error. Freshman
Hope Barrett walked to push a run home and, still with only one out, sophomore
Danielle Fick drove in two with a single. One more run scored on a groundout to first base by junior
Ella Collinsworth.
NDC posted two more runs in the fifth inning. A pair of Edinboro errors set the Falcons up, as Fick hit a single and Collinsworth reached on a fielder's choice. Both DeWeese and freshman
Avery Robinson touched home plate to put Notre Dame on top, 6-0.
Edinboro only recorded three hits in the game and two of them came in the seventh. An error to start the frame came back to hurt the Falcons as a pitch-hit double would drive the runner home. The Fighting Scots had runners on first and third, later in the inning, but they did not do any more damage.
Junior
Allison Weilnau (3-1) got the win, going four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Senior
Madison Olszewski entered the game and got the save after she went three innings, allowing one, unearned run.
Fick had two hits in the game and three RBI, for her third multi-RBI game in Florida.
In the second game, the Falcons scored all of their runs in the third inning, while sophomore
Grace Fisher had another complete game in the pitcher's circle, allowing two runs, one earned, and striking out five Dragons.
To begin the game, NDC hitters had a tough time figuring out Tiffin's pitcher Claire Feldkamp. The Falcons took advantage of a few mistakes by the Dragons in the third inning to get runs on the board. Quior reached first on an error, before DeWeese and Barrett walked. Robinson brought everyone home with a triple and NDC took a 3-0 lead.
Robinson's three RBI represent a career-high for her.
Tiffin would score once in the fourth inning and one more run in the sixth.
The Dragons, who have 10 wins on the season, have already fallen to NDC twice this year.
Notre Dame will play Slippery Rock and Saint Michael's College on March 9, the team's final day in Florida.
