CLERMONT, Fla. – On the final day of the Spring Break Trip, Notre Dame College swept both games of the doubleheader, on Saturday, taking down Slippery Rock University, 13-0 in five innings, before defeating Saint Michael's College, 5-4. Against Slippery Rock, pitcher
Grace Fisher earned the win with a complete game shutout, striking out a season-high 10 batters. In that same game, junior
Destany Blake recorded five runs batted in, which is a career-high and is tied for sixth most in program history.
In the top of the first inning, against SRU, freshman
Hope Barrett reached second base on an error, went to third base on a passed ball and scored on another error.
The Falcons had the bases loaded in the third, on an error, a walk and a fielder's choice. Three scored on a single by Blake and a fourth run came home on an RBI single by
Meadow Odum. NDC led, 5-0.
Five more runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning. Sophomore
Danielle Fick hit another single to load the bases before back-to-back walks plated two runs. Odum then doubled to clear the bases and put the Falcons in front, 10-0.
NDC took advantage of more SRU mistakes when a run scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch, another run scored on a passed ball and Blake had another RBI single.
Fisher struck out the side in both the second and third inning and she did not walk a single Rock player. Blake and Odum each recorded two hits and combined for eight RBI.
The second game was much closer, versus Saint Michael's. The Purple Knights scored twice in the first inning. To start the game, an NDC error, followed by an SMC triple and single put two runs on the board.
NDC's offense did not record a hit through the first three innings. And then in the fourth, with one out, Fick, Collinsworth and Blake hit three consecutive singles to score Barrett, who walked to start the frame. Back-to-back errors by Saint Michael's allowed two more runs to score give NDC a 4-2 lead. Later in the inning, senior
Katelyn DeWeese singled to left-center field to drive another run.
SMC loaded the bases in the fifth inning, with one out. A ball came back to pitcher
Allison Weilnau and she threw home for the force out. And then the next hitter popped out to first base to end the inning.
An error and a single plated two runs for the Purple Knights and closed the gap to one run, 5-4, in the sixth inning. Senior
Madison Olszewski entered the game in the circle for NDC and got the Falcons out of the inning.
Weilnau got the win after pitching 5 2/3 innings. She struck out five, allowing four runs, but just one was earned. Olszewski got the save after throwing 1 1/3 innings, not allowing a hit.
NDC went 8-3 over the 11 games in Florida.
The Falcons will come home to play Mercyhurst University, on March 13, at 3 and 5 p.m.
