CLERMONT, Fla. – On Wednesday, Notre Dame College recorded just three hits in a 3-1 loss to University of Minnesota-Duluth in game one. But in the second game of the day,
Allison Weilnau gave up one, unearned run in a 7-1 win against Southwest Minnesota State University.
In game one, the only scoring was done in the first inning and the fifth. To start the game, NDC's senior
Katelyn DeWeese walked and junior
Destany Blake moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, before freshman
Avery Robinson walked to put runners on first and second. With two out, junior
Alyssa Wahl reached on an error and then freshman
Hope Barrett drew a walk to give Notre Dame a 1-0 lead without recording a hit.
In the bottom of the fifth, Duluth put two runners on with a single and a walk. Sophomore pitcher
Grace Fisher, who was able to get the first two outs in the inning, made one mistake and Nicole Schmitt homered to give UMD a 3-1 lead.
Fisher (3-3) pitched well over six innings. She only walked two hitters and struck out seven, which included three K's in the bottom of the first.
The Notre Dame offense found a spark in game two. A pitching duel through two innings, neither team could score. Southwest Minnesota put the first run on the board on an error in the top of the third, but NDC responded in the bottom half of that inning.
Junior
Ella Collinsworth reached on an error to start the frame and then sophomore
Lindsay Breuer singled to right field to put runners on the corners. Freshman
Jocelyn Quior reached on a fielder's choice as Notre Dame scored a run and tied the game. Quior stole a base, and then after an error, Barrett knocked in another run with an RBI single. Three batters later, another error by SMSU allowed Wahl to reach base and a third run crossed the plate.
Notre Dame added three runs in the sixth inning. Blake, Collinsworth and Breuer hit back-to-back-to-back singles to start the inning and two runs scored. Breuer was credited with an RBI and then an error allowed a second run to score. Senior
Meadow Odum singled and then DeWeese doubled to plate two more and give NDC a 7-1 advantage.
Weilnau (2-1) allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out five to get the win.
Collinsworth and Breuer each had two hits in the second game of the day.
The Falcons will play Queens College, on Thursday, at 4:15 p.m.
