CLERMONT, Fla. – On Tuesday, Notre Dame College combined for 16 runs in a doubleheader sweep. To start the day, the Falcons defeated Goldey-Beacom College, 9-1 in six innings, and then took down Dominican University of New York, 7-6.
Danielle Fick had three hits in each game and totaled five RBI.
Notre Dame jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two innings against Goldey-Beacom, in the first game of the day.
To start the contest, senior
Katelyn DeWeese walked and immediately stole second. Junior
Destany Blake stepped up to the plate and gave NDC the lead with an RBI double.
In the second, senior
Mia Cipriano was hit by a pitch, with one out, before freshman
Jocelyn Quior doubled to put runners on second and third. After a GBC pitching change, DeWeese welcomed Alesia Doctor with a sacrifice fly and Blake knocked in a run with her second double of the game. Blake would steal second and freshman
Avery Robinson walked to set up an RBI single by Fick, giving NDC a 4-0 advantage.
Goldey-Beacom added one in the bottom of the third inning, but NDC's pitcher
Grace Fisher (3-2) did a nice job of getting out of trouble as she got the win, allowing just the one run over six innings, striking out five. She only allowed two hits in the third and two hits in the fifth.
Notre Dame closed things out with five runs in the top of the sixth. Senior
Meadow Odum started the frame with a double to left field. Cipriano came through with an RBI single and, two batters later, DeWeese drove in her second run of the day to give NDC a 6-1 advantage. The Falcons did not stop there as Fick added two more RBI with a double. Freshman
Kaitlyn Mazzocca drove in the Falcons' ninth run.
After Fisher shut Goldey-Beacom down in the bottom the inning, the game ended after the sixth.
DeWeese and Blake both had two RBI, while Fick finished with three.
In game two of the day, Notre Dame opened up another big lead in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first inning, DeWeese singled and Blake moved her over to second base. Then the offense really opened up as Robinson and Fick hit back-to-back RBI doubles, junior
Alyssa Wahl tripled to score the third run of the inning and Mazzocca singled in the fourth run.
In the bottom of the second, Blake led off with a single. Fick tripled to give NDC a 5-0 lead, and the next batter was Wahl, who hit a sacrifice fly.
Dominican fought back the rest of the game. The Chargers put up two in the third inning, one in the fourth and one run in the fifth.
After the Falcons' lead was cut to two runs, 6-4, in the bottom of the fifth, NDC needed another run, and got it when Cipriano reached on an error to score DeWeese. That would be a huge insurance run, as Dominican added two more runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead, 7-6.
Senior
Madison Olszewski did a nice job out of the bullpen, pitching two innings of relief, getting the win while allowing two runs, one earned.
DeWeese had two hits in the second half, while Fick recorded three hits, with two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman
Hope Barrett had her first two hits of her collegiate career.
Fick is now on a five-game hitting streak, going 10-for-15 at the plate in that span, and Blake also has a five-game hitting streak, racking up eight hits over those five contests. DeWeese has reached base in eight consecutive contests.
On Wednesday, Notre Dame will take on both the University of Minnesota Duluth and Southwest Minnesota State University.
