Notre Dame scores four in the first quarter, but falls on the road

QUINCY, Ill. – On Monday, Notre Dame College continued its trip through Illinois with a matchup against Quincy University. NDC grabbed the lead three different times in a close first quarter, but Quincy had a strong second quarter, which led to a 20-10 QU victory.

The Falcons played well on both sides of the field in the first quarter. After falling behind 1-0, Notre Dame's goalie Annika Duncan saved a shot to give her offense a chance to tie the game. She tallied four saves in the first quarter.

Notre Dame's offense went down the field and freshman Kendall Ratermann tossed the ball to freshman Gwen Bogash, who sent it on a line into the net to knot the score at one, with 11:45 on the first quarter clock.

NDC's Grace London won the next draw control and the Falcons had a shot on goal sent in on target by junior Joselyn Storm. That one was saved, but junior Grace Nickoloff picked the ball up found the back of the net to give NDC the 2-1 lead.

Quincy's goalie Kelly McClure saved an NDC free position shot, but she turned the ball over, and Notre Dame was back on the attack. Sophomore Grace Rotter found Nickoloff for the goal, giving Notre Dame a 3-2 advantage, with 7:48 to go in the first stanza.

The first quarter featured four ties and Notre Dame broke the tie, once again, when Bogash converted a free position shot, with just under four minutes to go in the opening quarter. That gave Notre Dame a 4-3 lead.

Quincy ended the period on a 2-0 run to take a 5-4 lead into the second. From there, the Hawks put up six more goals and took an 11-5 lead into the halftime break. Storm scored one goal for NDC in that quarter.

Rotter and sophomore Jovie Noack both put the ball into the net in the third quarter. The Falcons then scored three times in the fourth. Nickoloff got her third one of the game, early in the final stanza.

Sophomore Carlie Wilson scored back-to-back goals, between the 3:58-mark and the 2:21-mark. Storm won the draw control, prior to Wilson's first goal. Wilson took one shot that was blocked, but she stayed with it, scooping the ball up and rocketing it past the defense. Notre Dame then took advantage of a Quincy turnover, getting the ball to Wilson for another goal.

Nickoloff led the team with three goals, while Bogash and Wilson both had two.

Notre Dame will travel back to Illinois for a matchup with McKendree, next Saturday, March 9. First draw is scheduled for 6 p.m.
