DeWeese has big day at the plate, Fisher gives NDC a shutout in split of doubleheader

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – After multiple postponements for weather last week, Notre Dame College got back on the field for two games against Frostburg State University, on Sunday. Sophomore Grace Fisher pitched a complete game shutout as NDC won 6-0, to start the day. The offense for both teams was on full display in game two, as Frostburg State won by a score of 12-7.

Notre Dame was threatening to score right away in the first inning of game one. Senior Katelyn DeWeese walked to lead off the frame, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. She did not score, but the Falcons would break through for three runs in the third inning.

In the bottom of the third, No. 8 hitter Alyssa Wahl led off with a double to right field. Sophomore Lindsay Breuer laid down a bunt that was misplayed by the second baseman and everyone reached base safely. With two out, senior Meadow Odum was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then freshman Avery Robinson hit a fly ball into the left field that was dropped and allowed all three runners to cross the plate.

To start the fifth, DeWeese doubled and junior Destany Blake singled. Blake stole second to put two runners in scoring position, before Odum and Robinson hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to put NDC on top 5-0. And then, to start the bottom of the sixth, freshman Kennedy Bray pinch hit and recorded her first career hit. Freshman Jocelyn Quior and Wahl both singled to load the bases, leading up to an RBI single into left field by DeWeese.

Frostburg State had some opportunities, but Fisher always found a way to shut the Bobcats down. FSU led off the first inning with a walk and the second inning with a hit by pitch, but did not convert those into runs. They had two runners in scoring position in both the third and the sixth.

Fisher picked up her eighth win of the season in the shutout, striking out four. DeWeese and Wahl each had two hits, including a double.

In the second game of the day, Frostburg used several extra-base hits to push runs across. A leadoff double in the third led to an RBI single and RBI double, later in the inning, to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. But, Notre Dame responded right away. Wahl led off the bottom of the third with a single and scored on a triple off the bat of DeWeese. A groundout by Blake scored DeWeese to tie the game at two.

FSU went right back on top with four runs in the fourth inning and then a three-run homer in the sixth gave Frostburg State a 9-3 advantage.

The Falcons did work their way back into the game in the bottom of the sixth. Three consecutive singles by Robinson, sophomore Danielle Fick and pinch hitter Kaitlyn Mazzocca plated one run. Fick scored on a wild pitch and freshman Hope Barrett scored on an RBI groundout by Wahl to make the score 9-6.

The Bobcats added three more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win. The 12 runs allowed by Notre Dame in game two is tied for the most given up by the Falcons since Feb. 10.

DeWeese tied a season-high with three hits in game two, scoring three times. She was a home run shy of the cycle in the second game on Sunday and now has a four-game hitting streak, going 8-for-14 (.571) at the plate in that span. Blake had two hits and three RBI in game two.

Notre Dame has another home doubleheader, tomorrow beginning at noon, when Fairmont State University visits South Euclid.
