The NDC Falcons’ offense got off to a strong start in doubleheader against Fairmont State

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College and Fairmont State University got on the field for a noon start on Monday. NDC scored six runs in the first four innings of game one, but Fairmont State came back to win by a score of 11-6. In the second game, Notre Dame fell by a score of 6-0.

The ball was flying off the bat in the first game of the day. In the top of the first inning, with a runner on second base, Emily Riggs hit a home run over the center field fence to give FSU a 2-0 lead. Notre Dame came right back in the bottom half of the inning as senior Katelyn DeWeese and junior Destany Blake both singled to start the frame and they both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Senior Meadow Odum roped a two-run double into the right-center field gap to score both. Two batters later, junior Alyssa Wahl hit a ground-rule double to give NDC a 3-2 advantage after the first inning.

Notre Dame's pitcher Grace Fisher shut Fairmont down in order in the second inning and NDC's offense added on in the bottom half of the second. With two out, DeWeese walked and stole second base. Blake then dropped an RBI single down the right field line to put NDC on top 4-2.

A bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly for FSU in the third inning tied the contest at four. But, Notre Dame bounced back with in the bottom of the third when freshman Avery Robinson led off with a single, moved to second base on a groundout, headed to third on a single and scored on a wild pitch. Notre Dame was still threatening, with bases loaded and one out, but Fairmont State turned a double play to get out of the inning.

NDC pushed the lead to two runs, 6-4, in the fourth inning. With two out, Odum walked and scored all the way from first base on a long single to the wall off the bat of Robinson.

Robinson had four hits over the two games, on Monday, including a 2-for-2 performance in the second game.

Fairmont would put a comeback together over the fifth and sixth innings to pull away. In the top of the fifth, a Katy Darnell grand slam and a Grace Sobeck RBI single put FSU in front, 9-6. They added two more in the sixth on a two-run single.

In game two, Delaney Haller pitched very well for FSU. Fairmont put four runs on the board in the first inning and one more in the second.

The NDC Falcons drew two walked in the bottom of the first, but did not push a run across the plate. Notre Dame only had one hit through the first three innings, before recording two hits in the fourth.

Fairmont State added one more run in the top of the seventh.

Notre Dame will play Salem University, on March 27, at home. The start times will be 1 and 3 p.m.
