Gomes goes perfect from the dish to lead NDC to split with CU

CONCORD, W.Va. – Junior Caden Gomes went a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate, while sophomore Guy Young tossed six strong innings en route to a 10-3 victory in game two for the Notre Dame College baseball team (5-14, 3-3 MEC). The Falcons dropped game one 6-1, to split the Saturday afternoon series with Concord University (9-9, 2-4 MEC).
 
A pitcher's duel kicked off the day, as starter Johnny Anservitz sent the Mountain Lions down in order through the first two frames.
 
CU started the scoring during the bottom of the fourth inning in with three runs on three hits (3-0). Concord tallied two more runs on four hits in the home half of the fifth inning to lead 5-0.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, Notre Dame broke the stalemate when Johnny Costella and Caden Gomes exchanged back-to-back hits to lead-off the frame. With runners in scoring position following Gomes' double, Tyler Shadle produced an RBI groundout (5-1).
 
Despite the loss in game one, Gomes powered NDC on offense by going 3-for-3 with a double. In addition, Anservitz battled on the mound for six innings, picking up five strikeouts in a complete game effort.
 
In the second contest, Notre Dame struck first during the top of the second inning, posting one run on two hits. With two outs in the frame, Aaron Miranda generated a single through the left side, before stealing second base. Next, Devon Minney gave NDC the lead with an RBI single up the middle (1-0).
 
The Falcons added two more runs on two hits during the top of third inning to move in front 3-0. Once again with two outs in the inning, NDC saw Jacob Barker poke an RBI single to shortstop, scoring Gomes who reached base via hit by pitch (2-0). In the very next at-bat, Carson Petrecca singled to left field, driving in Shadle who also reached base on a hit by pitch (3-0).
 
In the top of the fourth inning, NDC's bats continued to roll as three more runs scored on three hits. First, Minney produced a lead-off home run to left field, pushing the Falcons in front 4-0. A few batters later and with two outs in the inning, Alexander Jones jolted a two-run single to left field, swelling the lead to 6-0.
 
The Mountain Lions grabbed a pair of runs back during the home half of the fourth inning, with two runs on two hits (6-2).
 
Notre Dame's two-out magic continued into the fifth inning, as Gomes roped an RBI double down the left field line, bringing Damion Legaspe around to score after a base on balls (7-2).
 
In response to a Mountain Lion score during the bottom of the sixth inning, Notre Dame added three runs insurance runs back during the top of the seventh inning. First, Shadle picked up an RBI on an infield single (8-3), before Jones cashed in on two-out, two-run double to left center (10-3).
 
Once again, Gomes powered the Notre Dame offense with another 3-for-3 showing at the dish, including a double, walk and three runs scored. Jones (2-for-5), Minney (2-for-4) and Miranda (2-for-3) also flashed multiple hits, as Jones drove home a team-high four. Furthermore, Shadle and Minney added two RBI apiece, while Barker, Gomes and Petrecca tallied one.
 
On the bump, Guy Young picked up his third win (3-0) on the year, twirling six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, to go with a pair of strikeouts. In addition, reliever Alex Dicke closed out the contest with an inning of hit-less, scoreless relief.
 
The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action on Sunday Mar. 24 at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at Glenville State University.
