Notre Dame falls to D’Youville

Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Wednesday, Notre Dame College welcomed D'Youville University to a very cold Mueller Field. After one half, Notre Dame trailed by just three goals, but D'Youville scored six times in the second half to pull away for an 11-6 victory.

D'Youville won the opening draw and Grace Grosso scored the first goal of the game to put DU ahead, 1-0.

Early in the contest, all of the players were fighting through the elements, as it was not only a cold day, but also very windy. After a few turnovers by both teams, the Saints put a second goal on the scoreboard and DU would hold a 3-0 lead after the first 10 minutes of the game.

NDC scooped the ball up, after a missed D'Youville shot, and took it down the field. A determined drive and shot by junior Grace Nickoloff resulted in a goal to put Notre Dame on the board, with 4:23 remaining in the first quarter.

D'Youville won the opening draw of the second quarter, but the Falcons' defense stepped up and blocked a shot. NDC sprinted down into the attacking third and Nickoloff passed the ball to sophomore Jovie Noack, who found the back of the net to make it a one-goal game, 3-2, with 13:56 remaining before halftime.

Nickoloff led NDC with two assists in the game.

Notre Dame's goalie Annika Duncan stepped up in the second stanza. She saved four shots in the first 11-and-a-half minutes of the quarter, including a free position attempt, and kept the game very close. Duncan would end the game with nine saves.

DU did break through for two goals before halftime and led 5-2, at the break.

Trailing 6-2, with under eight minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Falcons fought back and pulled within two. After a foul, junior Joselyn Storm set up for a free position attempt. She took the shot, which was saved, but the ball rolled away from the goalkeeper and Storm picked it up and scored.

Then, another shot was saved by Duncan on the defensive end, which led to a goal by junior Lexington Carson, making the score 6-4, with 3:58 to go in the third.

However, D'Youville scored four unanswered goals and took a 10-4 lead, midway through the fourth. Freshman Tatum Hagen and sophomore Ella Scoville both scored for the Falcons in the final four minutes of the fourth period to stop the DU run.

Storm led Notre Dame with three caused turnovers and three draw controls to go along with her goal.

Notre Dame travels north, this weekend, to face No. 11 Grand Valley State, on March 24. First draw is scheduled for 12 p.m.
