ASHLAND, Ohio – Scoring nine runs and raking 14 hits against the No. 10 team in the country, Notre Dame College (4-13) had their bats rolling on a chilly spring day. However, the Falcons were defeated by Ashland University (13-2) on Wednesday afternoon in nine innings, 17-9.
Notre Dame pounced on Ashland with four runs on four hits during the top of the first inning.
Johnny Costella began with a lead-off single to center field, followed by
Caden Gomes' walk, before
Tyler Shadle added a single to right field. In the very next at-bat,
Jacob Barker generated a two-run single to right center to give NDC the lead 2-0. Two batters later,
Alexander Jones tallied the Falcons fourth single of the inning, a two-run poke to center field, doubling the Notre Dame advantage to 4-0.
Ashland responded during the home half of the frame with seven runs of four hits to lead 7-4. Next, AU added a run in the third and fourth innings to lead 9-4.
In the top of the fifth inning, Notre Dame grabbed a run back as Jones drew an RBI walk with bases loaded (9-5). Gomes came around to score after starting the frame with a one-out single to center field.
The Eagles quickly answered with six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead 15-4.
Despite the AU rally, Notre Dame continued to battle, posting four runs on seven hits during the top of the eighth inning. Back-to-back singles by Jones and
Aaron Miranda kick-started the frame for the Falcons. Next,
Devon Morris registered an RBI single to make the score 16-6. After
Damion Legaspe singled to right center, Costella brought home Morris on an RBI single to left field (16-7). During the next at-bat, Gomes singled to first base, while Legaspe scored on an Eagle throwing error (16-8). Lastly, Shadle recorded an RBI single to right center, allowing Costella to score (16-9).
Shadle paced the Notre Dame College offense with a 3-for-5 showing at the dish. Costella (2-for-5), Gomes (2-for-4) and Jones (2-for-4) added multiple hits in the game. In addition, Jones carried the Falcons with a team-high three RBI, alongside Barker with two, and Costella, Morris and Shadle each had one
The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action on Saturday Mar. 22 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Concord University in Athens, WV.
