WHEELING, W.Va. – After scoring just six runs on Saturday, Notre Dame College had the bats ready to go on Sunday, combining for 15 runs with 21 hits, which included nine extra-base hits. Both
Meadow Odum and
Jocelyn Quior recorded four hits, while NDC pitching allowed one earned run all day. In game one, the Falcons won by a score of 6-2, while the second game went just six innings and Notre Dame was on top, 9-1.
Despite the start time moving up an hour, the Falcons were ready to go at 11 a.m. and put up five runs in the top of the first inning. Senior
Katelyn DeWeese hit an infield single to start the game and she stole second. Odum then singled to left field and DeWeese moved to third. Catching the Cardinals off-guard, Odum took off in an attempt to steal second. Once the ball was thrown across the diamond, DeWeese sprinted down the line and stole home. Junior
Destany Blake hit an RBI double and then freshman
Avery Robinson hit a ball toward first that was misplayed and rolled into right field to score a third run. Sophomore
Danielle Fick doubled to right field and then NDC took a 4-0 lead on an RBI single by freshman
Hope Barrett. Finally, Quior hit a sacrifice fly to plate the fifth run.
Freshman
Grace Fisher had a bounce-back game in the pitcher's circle. She picked up the win with a complete game, allowing two runs, one earned, and she struck out 12 batters, which ranks fourth all-time in NDC history and was one away from her career-high. She struck out the side in the first and then struck out two hitters in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
Wheeling scored one run on a homer in the second and then a runner who reached base on an error came around to score in the third.
Odum made sure the Falcons responded when she hit her third home run of the campaign by sending a line drive over the fence in center field to leadoff the fourth.
Odum and Fick both had two hits in the game. Fick hit a double and then recorded her fourth triple of the season, in the seventh. She is already top-5 in program history in triples in one season. The Notre Dame record is seven. NDC stole six bases and DeWeese had three of them, which tied her career-high and the program record.
In game two, the Falcons got the scoring started in the second inning. Both Fick and junior
Alyssa Wahl walked. The bases were loaded after Quior hit a perfectly placed bunt and reached first. Freshman
Ashley Apple singled to left field for her first career hit and RBI.
NDC really opened up the offense in the third, pushing six runs across the plate. Odum led off with a single to left. She used her speed to steal second base and then moved to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Robinson singled into center field for an RBI. Fick was hit by a pitch and then both Barrett and Wahl walked to score another run. Quior then hit a two-run double on a line into right-center field. With two out, DeWeese tripled to right field to score two more and give NDC a 7-0 advantage.
The Falcons added run No. 8 with a two-out rally in the fourth inning. Fick walked and then Barrett sent the ball down the right field line for an RBI triple. The Falcons final run was scored in the sixth, when Robinson hit an RBI double.
Quior had a career-high three hits in game two, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles. She finished the doubleheader four-for-four at the plate. DeWeese, Odum and Robinson all had two hits. DeWeese, Robinson and Quior ended the contest with two RBI, each.
Junior
Allison Weilnau pitched very well, throwing a complete game, while allowing one, unearned run. She struck out two hitters.
The Falcons will play their next 12 games at home, beginning on March 20, when Salem University comes up to South Euclid. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
