WEIRTON, W.Va. – Notre Dame College and West Liberty University played a doubleheader at Weir High School, on Saturday, due to wet field conditions. West Liberty won game one of the doubleheader with a walk-off double for a 6-5 win. Notre Dame fell 2-1 in the second game of the day.
The Falcons jumped on the board first, in the second inning of game one. Junior
Destany Blake doubled to begin the inning. Three batters later, with two out, freshman
Jocelyn Quior sent a ball over the fence for a two-run home run, the first of her career.
The next inning, in the top of the third, freshman
Hope Barrett singled to begin the frame. She stole second base and then moved to third on a fly out off the bat of freshman
Avery Robinson. Blake then grounded out to second base, scoring the run and giving NDC a 3-0 lead.
The Hilltoppers did not score a run until the fourth inning, but then quickly took the lead. A single, a sacrifice bunt, a steal of third and another single scored the first run. After a walk, Shelby Harris hit a home run to put West Liberty ahead 4-3.
Both teams went down in order in the fifth, before Notre Dame took the lead back in the sixth inning. Sophomore
Danielle Fick reached base on an error and senior
Meadow Odum hit an RBI double to tie the contest at four. WLU made a pitching change, but the next hitter was
Destany Blake and she hit an RBI single.
In the bottom of that inning, WLU used a sacrifice fly to knot the game back up at five. And then in the seventh, with one out, back-to-back doubles scored the winning run.
In the second game of the day, the Falcons took the first lead, again. In the fourth inning, senior
Katelyn DeWeese drew a leadoff walk. She came all the way around to score on an error.
West Liberty tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth, when they started the frame with back-to-back doubles. In the bottom of the fifth, WLU hit three singles to push a second run across the plate.
The Falcons did have runners on first and second in the sixth and got their first hit in the seventh, but could not tie the game.
NDC's pitcher
Allison Weilnau went six innings and allowed just two runs.
The Falcons travel to Wheeling, W.Va. for a doubleheader on March 17. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
