SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – For the third time in the last four games, Notre Dame College scored 10 goals in a contest. On Saturday, the Falcons secured their first home win of the year by taking down Walsh University by a score of 10-9.
Walsh took the first shot of the game, but NDC goalkeeper
Annika Duncan made the stop. Duncan would save 11 shots in the game, including five in the opening period as Walsh sent in nine shots.
The Falcons' offense went to work and scored first, just as they did on Wednesday. Setting up the play in front of the goal, sophomore
Ella Scoville sent a pass in to freshman
Gwen Bogash, who shot and scored.
At the 6:48-mark, Duncan saved back-to-back shots within six seconds to keep the game tied at one.
With 4:12 remaining in the first quarter, junior
Merryn Eaton scored the first of her two goals. Notre Dame led 2-1 after one quarter.
To begin the second quarter, Walsh tied the game at two, just 1:07 into the period. Mallory Miller, who scored the goal, then won the draw control and the Cavaliers were on the run. WU took a shot that went high, got the ball back but NDC's junior
Joselyn Storm caused a turnover.
That led to the first of two goals by freshman
Elizabeth Cline in the second quarter, with 11:49 to go before halftime. After Walsh tied the game at three, Cline scored again with 6:05 on the clock.
At halftime, Notre Dame and Walsh were tied at four, despite Walsh taking nine more shots than NDC (16-7).
After winning just one draw as a team in the first half, Notre Dame's freshman
Tatum Hagen won the opening draw of the second half. An NDC shot went wide and WU took advantage by going down the field and grabbing a 5-4 lead with a goal by Isabella Kelty.
Walsh got the ball back after an NDC foul on the draw and Kelty took another shot, but Duncan caught it in the air to make the save.
The Falcons then completely shifted the momentum and Storm stole the show on the offensive end. With 11:32 to go in the third, she scored on a free-position shot. Then, about two minutes later, sophomore
Jovie Noack converted on a free-position shot.
The Cavaliers tied the game at 6, but then NDC rattled off the next three goals. Cline caused a turnover and Notre Dame went down the field. Scoville found Storm for another goal, at the 5:38-mark in the third. Hagen won the next draw and sent the ball over to Eaton, who put NDC ahead, 8-6.
The Falcons sent two shots near the goal, one hit the post and one went wide, before Walsh took possession. Bogash stepped up and knocked the ball loose from the Walsh goalkeeper, Rebekah Bargeron, leading to another turnover. Storm then scored her third goal of the quarter, giving NDC a 9-6 lead.
In the fourth, WU outscored Notre Dame, 3-1, but a goal by Noack, with 5:47 remaining in the game, gave NDC the game-winning 10th goal.
Storm finished the game with five draw controls and two caused turnovers. She also led the team with three goals, as Cline, Eaton and Noack each had two. Hagen won three draw controls.
With her 11 saves, Duncan moves up to fourth in program history with 163 career stops.
"This was a big game for us because Walsh has had several really good seasons,'" head coach
Elizabeth Mettler said. "So, beating a cross-town rival and another conference champion, and this is our biggest win of the season, really boosts our confidence. We have alot of freshmen and sophomores on the field who can really grow [from a close game] like that."
Notre Dame will host D'Youville University, on March 20, with a start time of 3 p.m.
