SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – History was made inside Murphy Gymnasium on Wednesday evening as sophomore
Noel Weathers totaled three blocks to break the NDC single season record, surpassing All-American Joni DePiore's 56 blocks during the 1995-96 season. The Cincinnati, Ohio native added a game-high 13 rebounds and tied a career-high with three assists, however the Notre Dame College women's basketball team (8-17, 5-13 MEC) fell to Frostburg State University (16-9, 13-5 MEC), 80-67.
The first quarter began back and forth until NDC moved in front 10-5 after
Kennadi Harris made a three-pointer and
Lilee Carlson converted the old fashion three-point play at the 5:40 mark. Next, Harris knocked down another three-pointer to make the game 14-13 FSU, before the Bobcats took a 21-17 edge into the second quarter.
The scoring stalled during the second quarter as Notre Dame held Frostburg State to 4-21 (19.1%) shooting in the period. Despite trailing 31-17, the Falcons closed the half on an 8-2 run over the final four minutes, fueled by back-to-back three-pointers from
Cencere McDaniel and
Izabella Zirzow, to cut the Bobcat to lead to 33-25 at the break.
With the score reading 40-27 in the third quarter, a quick 9-3 brought the contest back to 43-36 FSU as
Karli Anker finished a layup through contact. Frostburg State closed the third period on a 12-5 run to lead 55-41 with 10 minutes to play.
The intensity ramped-up during the fourth quarter as Notre Dame tallied 26 points on 10 made free throws. Following a pair of free throws by
Hayley St. John and a layup from
Lilee Carlson, Notre Dame was within two possessions (59-53) with 6:56 left to on the clock. NDC continued to fight throughout the period as each time FSU regained a double-digit edge, the Falcons would immediately to bring the contest back within striking distance. However, as the buzzer hit zero, Notre Dame fell to Frostburg State 80-67.
Harris paced the Falcons with a season-high 18 points on three, three-point field goals. In addition, Anker tallied 12 points, while Carlson registered nine. Weathers and Carlson tag-teamed the facilitating duties with three assists a piece, as Weather ties a career-high.
On the glass, the aforementioned Weathers hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds, alongside McDaniel with eight and Zirzow with five.
Defensively, Weathers swatted a game-high three blocks to total 57 blocks on the year, setting the NDC single season record which had stood with All-American Joni DePiore for 27 years. Moreover, Carlson chipped in a pair of blocked shots, while McDaniel tied a career-high with three steals.
As a team, Notre Dame shot 23-68 (33.8%) from the floor, 8-23 (34.8%) from three and 13-20 (65.0%) from the charity stripe. The Falcons added 39 rebounds, nine assists, seven blocks and six steals.
Weathers will now have the opportunity to improve upon her record over the remainder of the season, as the Notre Dame College women's basketball team hits the road to face Fairmont State University on Saturday Feb. 24 at 2 p.m.
