NDC drops road contest at Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – In a week that featured the top two teams in the Mountain East Conference, the Notre Dame College women's basketball team (8-18, 5-14 MEC) traveled to Fairmont State University (21-5, 14-4 MEC) on Saturday afternoon. Despite, four Falcons in double figures, NDC fell to FSU 92-64.
 
Fairmont State jumped out of the gates with an 18-6 lead after the first quarter.
 
FSU continued their run into the second quarter by leading 30-10 at the midway point in the frame. Next, Notre Dame found their groove with an 8-0 run in less than a minute, highlighted by Karli Anker's three-pointer, followed by an and-one on back-to-back possessions (30-18). Fairmont State took the quarter 27-18 to lead 45-24 at the half.
 
Notre Dame continued to battle into the third quarter as the Falcons shot 10-15 (66.7%) from the floor in the frame. NDC put together a 7-0 run out of the break to trim the FSU edge to 45-31. Later in the third quarter, Notre Dame mounted a 10-2 scoring run, capped off by an and-one from Noel Weathers to pull within 11 points (62-51). NDC claimed the frame 27-22, as Fairmont State led 67-51 with 10 minutes left to play.
 
FSU closed out the game in the fourth quarter, as NDC fell 92-64 on the road.
 
Four NDC Falcons found their way into double figures, led by Anker's team-high 14 points on 2-2 shooting from downtown. Weathers added 13 points, while Cencere McDaniel chipped in 11 and Lilee Carlson scored 10. Three players tallied multiple assists in Anker (3), Carlson (3) and McDaniel (2).
 
On the glass, Weathers hauled in a game-high seven rebounds, while Carlson, McDaniel and Kennadi Harris secured four boards apiece.
 
Defensively, Weathers improves upon her NDC single season blocks record with a game-high three blocked shots, to total 60 on the season. In addition, Anker, Harris and McDaniel each swiped a pair of steals.
 
As a team, Notre Dame shot 22-61 (36.1%) from the floor, 5-17 (29.4%) from three and 15-18 (83.3%) from the free throw line. The Falcons added 32 rebounds, 10 assists, 11 steals and six blocks.
 
The Notre Dame College women's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. from the MEC finale against West Liberty. NDC will round out the regular season on Saturday Mar. 2 at 2 p.m. when Salem University travels to South Euclid, Ohio for a non-conference bout.
