SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College put the first six points on the scoreboard, Wednesday evening, but fell to the No. 16 ranked University of Charleston by a score of 86-67.
The Falcons played much harder than Charleston in the opening minutes. By the 16-minute mark, NDC had already grabbed three offensive rebounds, and had a blocked shot and a steal on the defensive end.
Sophomore
Devin Haid hauled in an offensive rebound and put the ball back up and in for two. After both teams missed multiple shots on the following possessions, junior
Gbolahan Adio powered his way into the paint and scored with a layup. Adio then grabbed an offensive board on the Falcons' next possession and junior
Andre Harris weaved his way to the basket for a layup to give NDC a 6-0 lead, with 16:36 remaining in the first half.
UC's Eddie Colbert III got the Golden Eagles on the board with his personal 7-0 run, hitting two free throws, a layup and a 3-pointer.
The Falcons found themselves down by a point, following Charleston's 9-0 run, but Haid scored the next four Notre Dame points as the lead went back-and-forth. The game featured seven lead changes between the 13:01-mark and the 10:44-mark of the first stanza.
Harris, who scored 12 first half points while shooting 50-percent from the field, put five straight points on the board for his team with a pair of layups and a free throw, after a foul was called on the second made basket. He helped keep NDC within striking distance, as the Falcons trailed, 23-20, with 6:20 remaining in the half.
An 8-0 run by Charleston put the Golden Eagles up by 11, 31-20. And at halftime, UC led by 13 points, 42-30. Along with Harris' 12 points in the first half, Haid finished the first 20 minutes with 10.
Charleston did not waste much time in the second half, scoring the first eight points after the intermission.
About midway through the half, the Falcons went on a run. Harris stole the ball and took it down the floor for a layup. With 9:09 on the clock, junior
Joshua Dames took a pass from Adio and knocked down a three to cut the deficit to 15, 64-49.
Notre Dame shot the ball at 46-percent (12-for-26) in the second half and had more than double the amount of points off turnovers that UC had, 13-6.
Harris finished the game with 17 points and eight rebounds, the most rebounds in a game for him since Dec. 2. Haid added 16 points before fouling out, late in the second.
Notre Dame will travel to Institute, W.Va. for a matchup with West Virginia State, on Feb. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
