Falcons drop to Yellow Jackets on Wednesday; Weathers registers monster double-double

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The block party rocks on for sophomore Noel Weathers, as the Cincinnati, Ohio native has now rejected at least five shots for the third consecutive contest, however the Notre Dame College women's basketball team fell to West Virginia State University on Wednesday evening inside Murphy Gymnasium, 82-56. The sophomore added 20 points, 14 rebounds and four steals on the night.
 
A frantically paced first quarter set the tone for the rest of the contest as WV State jumped out to a 24-15 lead.
 
The Falcons battled back during the second quarter, halting the Yellow Jackets to just 13 points on 5-18 shooting from the floor (27.8%). Notre Dame claimed the period 14-13, as Cencere McDaniel and Rachel Richardson produced a late 6-0 run to trim the WV State advantage to eight at the break (37-29).
 
Notre Dame stormed out of halftime, cutting the deficit to four (42-38), as Hayley St. John generated a steal, which led to a three-pointer from Richardson, assisted by Lilee Carlson. Next, West Virginia State closed out the third quarter on a 21-5 run, to move in front 61-43.
 
NDC continued to fight as five straight points from Karli Anker pushed the scored to 66-53 in favor of WVSU with 6:33 left to play. The Yellow Jackets controlled the remainder of the contest, as the Falcons fell 82-56.
 
Weathers paced the Notre Dame College offense with a game-high 20 points, alongside Anker with 13 (3-5 3PT FG) and McDaniel with nine. Carlson and Anker led the team in assists with four and three, respectively.
 
On the glass, Weathers corralled a game-high 14 rebounds, notching her team-best fourth double-double of the season. In addition, St. John chipped in a season-high seven boards.
 
Moreover, Weathers posted another monster game on the defensive side of the ball, recording a game-high five blocks and four steals. In the last three games, the Mt. Healthy High School product has blocked six (Dec. 30 vs. Tiffin), six (Jan. 6 at Lake Erie) and five (today), all top five provisions in NDC single-game history. Weathers is the first player in program history to post multiple five-block games in a season, including the first player with multiple such games during their entire career.
 
As a whole, Notre Dame shot 20-66 (30.3%) from the floor, 5-16 (31.3%) from three and 11-26 (42.3%) from the free throw line. The Falcons added 36 rebounds, 15 assists, eight steals and five blocks.
 
The Notre Dame College women's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. as NDC travels to the University of Charleston.
