NDC falls on final day of Atlantic Region Crossover

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College volleyball team (1-7) wrapped up the Atlantic Region Crossover on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons fell to Pitt-Johnstown (8-2) in straight sets, before a loss to Shippensburg (7-5) in four.
 
Kiley Kalina and the Falcons started game one with a 4-0 run, punctuated by a service ace. The Mountain Cats answered by scoring eight of 11 points to move ahead 14-11. Next, NDC flipped the script with a 10-4 surge to grab a 21-18 advantage. However, UPJ closed out the first set by claiming seven of the last nine points in the frame (25-23).
 
Pitt-Johnstown led off the second set with a quick 8-0 lead, before NDC clawed the contest back to 12-8. The Mountain Cats continued their pressure to win set two, 25-13.
 
UPJ carried the momentum over into set three, 25-7.
 
Sydney Bray led the NDC offense with seven kills, alongside Palmer and Diamond Baker with four. Jayme Zoeckler registered a team-high 17 assists, as Kalina tallied a team-high 14 digs.
 
Notre Dame totaled 21 kills on 90 total attacks (.033 attack percentage), to go with 20 assists, 44 digs, four blocks and one ace. Pitt-Johnstown posted 40 kills on 102 total attacks (.304 attack percentage), to go with 29 assists, 48 digs, two blocks and nine aces.
 
In the second match of the day, NDC rallied themselves to take a 14-8 lead in set one. The Falcons scored eight of nine points to open up the early lead, aided by a handful of Raider errors. Notre Dame continued to tack on points, closing out the set 25-20, as Bray and Comer led the way with four kills apiece.
 
Shippensburg gathered their footing in the second set, moving in front 11-6, before taking the frame 25-12.
 
SU built an early lead in set three (10-4), before the Falcons put together a 6-1 scoring run, trimming the lead to one (11-10). Palmer, Comer and Zoeckler fueled the spree for NDC. Next, the Raiders mounted a 10-2 run, taking command of the stanza 23-14, and finishing off the set 25-16.
 
The fourth set went to Shippensburg, 25-11 after getting out to early leads of 6-0 and 12-3.
 
The Notre Dame College offense was led by Bray's team-high 11 kills, alongside Comer with 10 kills. Zoeckler tied for the game-high with 29 assists as she set up the NDC attack all day long.
 
Defensively, Kalina (12) and Lilliana Mook (10) led the team in digs, as Mook generated a new career-high.
 
As a whole, Notre Dame claimed 36 kills on 124 total attacks (.097 attack percentage), to go with 33 assists, 43 digs, five blocks and one ace. Shippensburg had 48 kills on 118 total attacks (.271 attack percentage), to go with 44 assists, 52 digs, four blocks and 12 aces.
 
The Notre Dame College volleyball team will be back in action on Friday Sept. 22 as the Falcons travel to West Virginia Wesleyan College at 7 p.m.
