Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Falcons’ offense opens up for three goals, defense keeps shutout streak alive

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College men's soccer was happy to be back on Mueller Field for the first time in nearly two weeks. The Falcons remain undefeated with a 3-0 victory over Frostburg State University and NDC now has shut out four opponents in the first five games of the season.

Notre Dame's defense was stifling again, on Wednesday, while taking on the Bobcats. NDC allowed just one shot in the first half and, while FSU totaled seven shots throughout the second half, the Bobcats were held to one shot on target in the game.

The Falcons' offense scored three goals for the first time since Sept. 3. Junior Mirai Sato played a major part in the offensive outburst, getting out in front of the Frostburg State defense and scoring twice.

In the 14th minute, sophomore Jared Rimmer pushed the ball up to senior Evans Armah. Armah ran down the field, into the box and then sent a pinpoint pass toward Sato, who was in front of the goal. The junior used a header to redirect the ball into the back of the net and give NDC an early lead.

Not long after, in the 23rd minute, junior Connor O'Reilly sent a pass from behind the midfield line into the attacking area where Sato took possession with a touch off the top of his head and beat a Bobcat defender down the field. While one-on-one with the goalkeeper, he sent a shot low and to the left that cruised past the FSU goalkeeper, giving NDC a 2-0 lead.

NDC had a couple chances later in the first half as junior Adam Webster and junior Ailton Fagner Silva both took a shot on goal, but both shots were saved.

In the 63rd minute, sophomore Guilherme Wanderley sent a shot in that was too high. He would redeem himself four minutes later, when he scored his first collegiate goal. Armah, who totaled two assists for the first time in his collegiate career, sent the ball into the box. The ball grazed a Frostburg defender and then Wanderley gathered it in and sent a shot to the right side, past the diving FSU goalkeeper Joel Assal.

Notre Dame's goalkeeper Danilo Abayo Wilson got his first work in the 86th minute, when he stopped the Bobcats' only shot on target.

"We have really good chemistry and the communication is there," Wilson said after the game, talking about the NDC defense. "To be honest, I don't have much to do, because my teammates work so hard."

Sato took five shots in the game, four on target during his two-goal performance. Silva added two shots on goal.

Notre Dame will host the University of Charleston, on Sept. 17. That match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
