WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – For the third time in four games this season, Notre Dame College shut out an opponent. On Sunday, the Falcons traveled to West Liberty University and used a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to win, 1-0.
The Falcons did not take their first shot until the 22nd minute, when sophomore
Guilherme Wanderley sent one to the left side of the goal. WLU goalkeeper Noah Underwood made the save. In the 26th minute, NDC had worked the ball into the middle of the box, but a shot by junior
Mirai Sato went high.
Notre Dame put the only goal on the board with about 12 minutes to go in the first half. A hard foul in the box drew an instant whistle and NDC was awarded a penalty kick. Junior
Carlos Almeida was called upon and sent a line drive over a diving Underwood.
NDC took seven shots in the first half, while the Hilltoppers were held to four.
Between the 50th minute and the 62nd minute, Notre Dame took three shots on target, when freshman Xisto Higor, Almeida and junior
Connor O'Reilly all sent the ball in, but could not find the net.
With less than 25 minutes remaining, the Hilltoppers had their best opportunity in the box, but a shot aimed to top right was snagged out of the air by junior
Danilo Abayo Wilson.
So far this season, the NDC defense has held the opponent scoreless in 359 minutes. The only goal allowed came with less than 10 seconds remaining against Ohio Dominican.
Notre Dame comes home for its next three games, beginning with a matchup against Frostburg State University, on Sept. 13, at 4 p.m.
