Softball has clutch hitting, while pitching strikes out 13 in sweep of Glenville State

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – After trailing most of game one of the doubleheader, on Sunday, Notre Dame College scored eight runs in the sixth inning to defeat Glenville State University, 9-2. In the second game, NDC pitcher Allison Weilnau allowed one unearned run as the Falcons won, 4-1.

Prior to the games, Notre Dame honored its seniors. Emmilee McCracken, Emily Marsh and Alexi Maciejowski walked around the bases, surrounded by teammates and family.

"I am insanely proud of this senior class," said head coach Kelsey Stopp. "They showed up to play today and, above all, they led us to two wins. I'm grateful for their dedication to this program here at NDC."

The first two Glenville State hitters reached base in game one, with a single and a double. A groundout allowed a run to score, but after that, NDC's pitcher Grace Fisher settled down and got out of the inning.

Glenville State had bases loaded in the top of the second inning, but could not score. The Pioneers had at least one base runner in every inning and would strand 12 runners on base throughout the contest. The Falcons' leadoff hitter was walked in the first three innings of the game, but NDC did not put a run on the board until the fourth inning.

To start the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Ella Collinsworth singled. With one out, sophomore Alyssa Wahl tripled to the gap in right field, tying the contest at one. With one out in the sixth inning, the Pioneers took the lead back when Emma McLean homered to left field.

Notre Dame's offense woke up in a major way in the bottom of the sixth. The Falcons scored eight runs in an inning for the first time since April 30, 2021. After the first batter of the inning grounded out, Collinsworth singled before three consecutive batters drew a walk to push a run home. GSU made a pitching change, but Marsh put a base hit down the third base line to plate two runs and give NDC a 4-2 lead. Two batters later, sophomore Destany Blake singled to center to score two more runs. Junior Katelyn DeWeese and sophomore Emma Gumont both hit an RBI single and then a double steal scored the eighth run of the inning and put Notre Dame up 9-2.

Collinsworth led the team with two hits, while freshman Danielle Fick and Marsh each had two RBI. Fick, DeWeese, Gumont and Kelly Troup all stole a base.

Fisher (9-9) picked up the win after working out of several jams. She allowed just two runs, while striking out seven hitters over seven innings.

In game two, Notre Dame took an early lead in the second inning. Maciejowski led off with a double to left-center field. Marsh stepped up, with two out, and singled through the left side of the infield to put Notre Dame ahead, 1-0

GSU scored a run on an error in the top of the fourth, but Notre Dame grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the inning. To start the two-out rally, Blake walked. Marsh hit a ball to deep right field that was dropped by the right fielder and allowed Blake to score the go-ahead run. Freshman Lindsay Breuer singled in another run to give NDC a 3-1 advantage.

Notre Dame added on in the sixth and it was a familiar duo doing the damage. Maciejowski singled to start the frame and, three batters later, Marsh hit a double into the left-center field gap to score the run.

Weilnau (14-9) won the game after allowing one run, but it was unearned. She struck out six.

DeWeese, Maciejowski and Marsh all had two hits. Marsh added two RBI, and finished the doubleheader with four runs batted in.

"Our pitching was consistent and they did a great job of getting us out of some tough situations," Stopp mentioned. "Very happy with both Allie [Weilnau] and Grace [Fisher]. Emma Gumont and Katelyn DeWeese were both a highlight reel in the outfield today. It was so fun to watch them.

This team is special and we have our sights set high to continue winning and getting the job done."

Notre Dame will play Concord University, at home, on April 25. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
