Records: NDC is now sitting at 4-7, with an MEC record of 3-1. Charleston is also 4-7, with a conference mark of 3-1. W.Va. Wesleyan is looking for its first win after starting the season 0-10 (0-4 MEC).
Coaches Corner: Ben Morhac enters year number four on the sideline at Notre Dame and has put together a record of 28-19 (20-3 MEC). Melanie Rizzotti is now in her second season as head coach at Charleston and Hannah Lively is in year number seven at WVWC.
Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) top 25 poll.
Series History: Notre Dame has defeated W.Va. Wesleyan once this season, and the Falcons have an all-time record of 11-4 against the Bobcats. Since 2016, the Falcons have gone 7-3 against the Golden Eagles.
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame lost in a close contest to Frostburg State (14-13), last Wednesday, and then beat Alderson Broaddus (17-3) on Friday. In the battle with Frostburg, NDC led 3-1 after one quarter, but fell behind 7-3 with nine minutes to go in the second quarter. The teams were tied at eight at halftime and Notre Dame led 12-11 after three. FSU scored three times in a low scoring fourth quarter to win by one. In the win over Alderson Broaddus, six players scored multiple goals.
In the Mountain East Conference, NDC ranks first in draw controls per game (11.82) and shot percentage (.429). The team is second in the MEC in goals per game (9.64), assists per game (5.27), caused turnovers per game (9.73) and clearing percentage (.781). The Falcons rank 11th in NCAA Division II in lowest amount of turnovers per game (13.36).
Individually,
Piper Hammond leads the MEC, and ranks 17th in the country, with 2.09 caused turnovers per game. She also ranks second in the conference with four draw controls per game and third with 2.18 ground balls per game.
Jamira Mashore is second in assists (15) and assists per game (1.36). Goalie
Annika Duncan ranks second with a goals against average of 12.7.
Joselyn Storm leads the team with 16 goals and 22 points.
Noting the Golden Eagles: After starting the season 0-6, Charleston has won four of its last five games. Last week, UC beat up on West Virginia Wesleyan (17-3) and lost to Frostburg State (16-9). Against W.Va. Wesleyan, Charleston took an 8-1 lead after one quarter and outscored WVWC 5-0 in the second half. In that game, Madison Partridge scored four goals and caused five turnovers, while Gianni Blundell added five. Antonia Martinez totaled three goals and three assists. Partridge scored four goals against Frostburg State, but Charleston was outscored 8-4 in the second half in the loss.
In NCAA Division II ranks, Charleston is first in the country with 24.18 ground balls per game and ranks second with 13.91 caused turnovers per game. The team leads the MEC with 5.82 assists per game, an .843 clear percentage, a .444 free position percentage, 16.45 points per game, 10.64 goals per game and 19.91 shots on goal per game.
Madison Partridge is second in the MEC with 2.18 goals per game and leads the conference with 5.9 shots per game. She has scored 24 total goals. Darby Stolz leads the MEC with a free position percentage of .538. Madison Sobolewski ranks second in the conference with 1.64 caused turnovers per game, and she has totaled 18 caused turnovers this season. Gianna Blundell has 17 assists and 1.7 per game, leading the league in both.
Noting the Bobcats: This season, W.Va. Wesleyan has scored over five goals in a game, only twice. Despite scoring the first goal of the game, the Bobcats lost 17-3 to Charleston, last week. Then, they lost 16-3 to Davis & Elkins. Goalkeeper Gabriella Gomez totaled 23 saves over the two games.
As a team, WVWC is third in the MEC with a free position percentage of .382. Raveena Navalgund is second in the MEC with a free position percentage of .500 and she leads the team with nine goals. Emma Reger leads the conference with a shot percentage of .667. Gabriella Gomez is 5th in the country with 11.9 saves per game and 18th in D2 with 119 total saves.
