The Falcons get on the board early to take down No. 10 Seton Hill, go 1-1 on the day

CLERMONT, Fla. – Notre Dame College continued on with their trip to Florida, on Sunday, with two more games. The Falcons struggled to get runs across the plate in game one, falling 3-2 to Pitt-Johnstown, but then NDC put five runs on the board through the first three innings to defeat No. 10 ranked Seton Hill University, 5-2. Sophomore Emma Gumont had four hits and three RBI, while freshman Grace Fisher got the win and tossed a complete game against Seton Hill.

NDC's Allison Weilnau and Pitt-Johnstown's Julie Shinavski were in a pitching duel through the first three innings of game one. UPJ did not have a baserunner until the third inning, when the Mountain Cats loaded the bases, but could not score. In the bottom of that inning, NDC had two runners on, but the game remained scoreless.

The Mountain Cats hit four singles in the fourth inning, and two runs came in to score. In the top of the fifth, a one-out walk, stolen base and double put runners on second and third for Pitt-Johnstown. They would get a pivotal run on a passed ball to pull ahead 3-0. UPJ had runners on second and third base, but junior Madison Olszewski entered the circle and got out of the inning.

The Falcons attempted a comeback in the bottom half of the fifth. Sophomore Destany Blake singled and stole second base. Freshman Danielle Fick singled and stole second to put runners on second and third. After junior Katelyn DeWeese reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, Gumont singled and brought in two runs.

Gumont and Fick finished the game with two hits, each. Weilnau took the loss, but still struck out five batters in 4 2/3 innings pitched.

Going against their second top 20 ranked opponent of the weekend, the Falcons got the party started early. With two out in the first inning, Gumont put a ball into right field and ran all the way around for an inside-the-park solo homer.

Junior Mia Cipriano singled in the second inning, but was still on first with two out. NDC took advantage of a mistake, as an error by the SHU pitcher Chloe Elliott allowed a run to score and the inning to continue. Fick singled to right center to drive in another run.

Notre Dame continued to add on in the third frame. Gumont led off the inning with a single to shortstop and advanced to second on a throwing error. After a sacrifice bunt by graduate student Alexi Maciejowski, sophomore Ella Collinsworth tripled in the Falcons' fourth run of the game. A Cirpiano ground out scored the second run of the inning and Notre Dame led 5-0.

In the circle, Fisher had a perfect game going through four innings. To begin the fifth inning, she allowed a leadoff home run and a one-out triple, but settled in and struck out the next two hitters. Seton Hill tacked on one more run the next inning, putting together three singles with only one out. But, once again, Fisher got out of trouble and finished the inning with a pop up and a line out.

The Painesville, Ohio native went seven innings, striking out nine and allowing just two runs.

Gumont had two more hits in the second game, and totaled four hits and three RBI on the day. Over the weekend, she went 7-for-14 at the plate in four games. Collinsworth also had two hits against SHU.

The Falcons have Monday off and then will take on California (Pa.), at 9 a.m., and Concordia, at 11:30 a.m., on Tuesday.
