Notre Dame dominates second half in road victory over Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. – A slow start for Notre Dame College resulted in a 4-3 Davis & Elkins College lead at halftime. The Falcons exited the locker room and made the proper adjustments as they outscored D&E, 11-0, in the second half to win by a score of 14-4. Five Falcons scored multiple goals and nine total players found the back of the net.

The player that made a major difference in the first half was the Davis & Elkins' goalkeeper Marissa Cuevas. She stopped nine NDC shots on goal in the first 30 minutes of the game, while allowing just three goals.

Notre Dame did strike first, with 9:31 to go in the first quarter. Senior Kendal Johnson put the ball into the net, with an assist by sophomore Camille Brathwaite. A minute-and-a-half later, a free position shot by sophomore Lexington Carson hit the post, the Falcons regained possession but senior Jamira Mashore's shot was saved by Cuevas.

Izzie Sevila scored the Senators' only goal of the first quarter and the teams entered the second, tied at one.

The Falcons' defense continued to play well and forced five turnovers in the second quarter. Freshman Carlie Wilson scored with 7:42 remaining to put the Falcons up 2-1.

Within a minute, Davis & Elkins had scored two goals to take a 3-2 lead. Griselle Rosado won a draw control and took a shot on NDC's goal. She was fouled and converted on the free position shot. D&E won the next draw and Rosado scored again.

The Senators were on a roll and won a third consecutive draw control. The Falcons slowed the momentum for a few minutes when sophomore Grace Nickoloff caused a turnover. However, her shot on the other end was saved and Davis & Elkins had possession again. Rosado scored her third goal in five minutes when she found the net at the 2:42-mark and gave the Senators a 4-2 lead.

With under a minute to go, sophomore Joselyn Storm threw the ball ahead to freshman Ella Scoville, who scored to stop the D&E run and go into the halftime break down, 4-3.

Through the first half, Notre Dame was leading several statistical categories, aside from the score. They had taken eight more shots (16-8) and caused seven more turnovers (8-1) than Davis & Elkins.

NDC flipped a switch in the second half. After both goalkeepers had made a save to start the third quarter, the Falcons cleared the ball down the field and had two chances at a free position goal. Johnson's attempt was saved and then Carson tied the game, with 10:23 remaining.

Scoville won the next draw control to get the ball back to the Falcons. As the Senators were playing down a player, due to a yellow card, Storm went from left to right in front of the goal and found space to score. NDC held a 5-4 advantage.

NDC won nine draw controls throughout the second half and Scoville had seven of them.

The Falcons continued to score, as Mashore found Storm for a goal that gave Notre Dame a 6-4 lead. With caused turnovers and draw controls, NDC did not allow the Senators to keep possession for long. Notre Dame would score two more goals in the final minute as Mashore had one and Vari scored the other.

The dominant play continued into the fourth quarter. D&E turned the ball over three times and won one draw control in the final 15 minutes.

The offense went back to work as NDC scored six more goals in the fourth. Mashore helped out with two assists and scored once in the final stanza. Senior Megan Dano also had a goal and an assist, while graduate student Faith Flanagan converted two free position shots.

Storm, Johnson, Mashore, Flanagan and Vari all finished with two goals. Mashore led the team with three assists. Kayla Manna totaled a career-high three caused turnovers.
