Game Recap: Baseball |

Strong pitching highlights series split with GSU; Minney walks-off NDC in game one

AVON, Ohio – For the second game in a row, Notre Dame College (3-14, 3-5 MEC) produced hits in the clutch as freshman Devon Minney walked-off the Falcons in game one 5-4 over Glenville State (10-15, 3-5 MEC). With one-on and one-away in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Ocean View High School product stroked an RBI single up the middle, jolting the Falcon bench into a frenzy. The Pioneers would respond by taking game two 3-0 in extra-innings, splitting the season series 1-1.

Starting pitcher Kyle Farrell locked down the GSU through 4.2 innings pitched, as the North Royalton, Ohio native had yet to allow a hit. The redshirt sophomore sophomore's performance was commendable, allowing three runs (0 earned) and only one hit over 5.0 innings pitched en route to a no-decision. The North Royalton High School product also punched out a career-high six Pioneer batters in the game.

The Falcons jumped on the board first, with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning. Minney singled to the shortstop to leadoff the frame, followed by Johnny Costella who reached on an error. The duo came around to scored a few batters later as Johnathan Cook poked a two-run single through the left side, giving NDC the 2-0 lead.

Notre Dame added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after a pair of hits. Zachary Kakos began the stanza with a single to right center. Next, Caden Gomes and Cook drew back-to-back walks, loading the bases for NDC with two outs. Redshirt junior Alec Mendoza stepped up in the clutch for the Falcons by generating a two-run single through the right side, doubling the NDC advantage (4-0).

Glenville State jumpstarted their offense with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, capped off by a two-out, two-run single through the left side, GSU's first hit of the game (4-3).

The Pioneers tied the contest at 4-4 after a two-out RBI single to center field in the top of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Falcons regained their magic touch to rally for the late win. First, Preston Mauzy hit a leadoff single to right field, allowing Joe Prevesk to pinch run. Next, Nate Miller executed a sacrifice bunt, moving Prevesk into scoring position. With one out and the winning run on second base, Minney played hero for Notre Dame College by producing an RBI single up the middle, scoring the speedy Prevesk and walking-off NDC for the second time in as many games.

Four Falcons enjoyed multiple hits as Cook, Mauzy, Mendoza and Minney each tallied two hits apiece in game one.

Cook posted his first career multi-RBI game by driving in two runs on a 2-for-2 day at the plate.

Minney and Mendoza each went 2-for-4 and picked up the other RBI for NDC, as Mendoza totaled his 13th career multi-RBI outing.

Mauzy took care of business in the designated hitter role, flashing 2-for-3 with a walk.

Reliever Devin Fish earned the victory on the mound, his second in as many games. The graduate student pitched 2.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out one. Both Fish and Farrell combined to allow just two Pioneer hits over seven innings, a season-best for Notre Dame.

In game two, strong pitching continued, creating a stalemate for seven innings as the two sides combined for zero runs, five hits and 11 strikeouts.

Sophomore Matthew Brown received the starting nod in game two as the Rootstown High School product tossed a gem for head coach Len Barker and the Falcons. Brown was tabbed with a no-decision after going 5.0 innings, allowing zero runs and only one hit, while striking out three.

Similar to Farrell in game one, Brown carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning against Glenville State before allowing a bunt single to first base, the only hit he surrendered. As a whole, Notre Dame received tremendous starting pitching from Brown and Farrell, as the one-two punch combined to throw 10.0 innings, allowing zero earned runs, and two hits, while sending down nine Pioneers batters.

Despite, the fortuitous pitching in game two, Notre Dame fell in eight innings to Glenville State 3-0.

The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action on Wednesday Mar. 29 as the Falcons travel to North Canton, Ohio to take on Walsh University at 3 p.m.
