Notre Dame sweeps Frostburg State for first time, off to best start in MEC play in program history

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – After being rerouted to Fairmont, due to the weather in Frostburg, Md., Notre Dame College was ready to play on Saturday night. The Falcons scored 11 runs on 11 hits in game one, and fought off a potent Frostburg State offense for an 11-8 victory. In game two, Grace Fisher tied a program record with 13 strikeouts in a 3-0 victory.

The Falcons picked up their first wins over Frostburg State in program history. And with a record of 5-1, NDC is off to its best conference start since joining the Mountain East Conference in 2014.

The first game of the day was all about the offense as the teams combined for 19 runs and 19 hits. Sophomore Ella Collinsworth walked to begin the top half of the second inning. Graduate student Alexi Maciejowski singled to center and both runners moved up on a groundout. Freshman Lindsay Breuer put the ball into center field for a two RBI single and junior Meadow Odum doubled to bring in the third run of the contest.

Frostburg State tied the game in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on just one hit. They loaded the bases with a hit by pitch, a single and an error. A walk scored the first run and then back-to-back groundouts made the score 3-3.

Without skipping a beat, Notre Dame came up to bat in the third inning and put two more runs on the board. With two out, Collinsworth had an infield single, Maciejowski doubled and sophomore Destany Blake brought them both home with a base hit.

The Falcons then, seemingly, put the game away in the fifth inning. Junior Katelyn DeWeese singled, stole second and Gumont doubled to left field to score a run. NDC scored a second run on an error and a third on a ground out to push its lead to five runs, 8-3.

FSU was not willing to go down without a fight and scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the contest for a second time. A two-run homer by Brianna Powell got the scoring started. Two RBI singles and a stolen base allowed the Bobcats to knot the score up at eight, as they scored those five runs on five hits.

As they have done in most games this year, Notre Dame responded immediately and took the lead back. With one out and a runner on first base in the sixth inning, freshman Danielle Fick doubled and freshman Alyssa Wahl walked to load the bases. A two-run double by Gumont gave Notre Dame the lead and a third run scored on a groundout.

Despite challenges throughout the game, NDC pitcher Allison Weilnau was locked in for the final two innings. She put the Bobcats down without much of an issue to close the game. Weilnau, who pitched a complete game, ended the contest with only three earned runs allowed.

Eight of the players in the Notre Dame lineup had at least one hit. Gumont, Maciejowski and Odum all posted two hits. Both of Gumont's hits were doubles and she collected three RBI. Blake was also credited with three RBI.

NDC got on the board right away in game two. With one out in the first inning, DeWeese walked, Gumont singled to center and Maciejowski roped a ball to center field to score a run.

Frostburg State had been shutout one time this season, prior to Saturday. The Bobcats had five total baserunners in the second game. Fisher hit a batter in the first inning, but she did not allow a hit until the fourth and FSU totaled just three hits.

To start the top of the fourth inning, Blake singled to right field. Two batters later, she would come around to score the second run of the game on a groundout.

In the seventh, Notre Dame took advantage of an error by FSU to score its third run. Collinsworth was on third, after reaching on an error, and Maciejowski was on first. Maciejowski attempted to steal second and once the Bobcats' catcher threw across the diamond, Collinsworth took off and scored.

In the bottom of the seventh, following a single and a walk, FSU had the tying run come to the plate. Fittingly, Fisher struck out the final two batters to end the game. At least one Bobcat struck out in every inning and Fisher struck out more than one batter in four separate frames.

Seven players had at least one hit for the Falcons in game two. Maciejowski led the team with two.

Notre Dame will play on the same field when they battle Fairmont State, tomorrow, with start times of 1 and 3 p.m.
