Quincy then made its presence known by scoring two goals within 15 seconds. Patricia Chavira won back-to-back draws and Josie Szamanda scored back-to-back goals. NDC turned the ball over and Quincy took advantage as Danielle Robinson scored her first goal of the game at the 10:39-mark in the first quarter to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead. Quincy would lead 5-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Notre Dame took advantage of its free position attempts in the first quarter to stay in the game. With nine minutes to go in the first, freshman
Tess Lisy converted on one and then Mashore put the ball into the back of the net with 2:28 to go.
To start the second stanza, the Falcons had two shots saved by QU goalkeeper Kelly McClure. They finally broke through around the nine minute mark. Quincy turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions, and Notre Dame's sophomore
Joselyn Storm scored with 9:03 remaining and freshman
Carlie Wilson put one into the net with 6:56 to go before halftime.
Quincy turned the ball over seven times in the second quarter and NDC's offense took advantage almost every time. Storm caused another turnover and that led to a goal by senior
Megan Dano, with an assist by Mashore.
With less than a minute to go before the half, graduate student
Faith Flanagan scored with an assist by Johnson to give Notre Dame a 7-6 advantage, the team's first lead since the score was 1-0.
The Falcons' defense was suffocating, forcing 12 turnovers in the first half and 26 for the entire game.
Head coach
Ben Morhac spoke about the team's adjustments after falling behind 6-3 in the second.
"We made slight adjustments to the defense which helped get offense more possessions," Morhac said. "The offense was more patient and moved better today."
Notre Dame continued pelting the opponent's goal by taking two shots within the first two minutes of the first half. The Falcons scored their first goal of the quarter at the 7:27-mark when Mashore scored again, with an assist by sophomore
Lexington Carson.
Carson won two draw controls to go along with her assist.
The combination of Dano-to-Mashore resulted in another goal that gave Notre Dame a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth.
Quincy would turn the ball over eight times in the fourth quarter, and six of those were caused by a Falcon. Storm and Hammond had the NDC goals in the final stanza to give NDC a comfortable three-goal lead.
"It was nice to see so many different goal scorers today," Morhac mentioned. "It's nice to get our first win but we still have a lot of work to do."
Mashore had three goals, Storm added two and six others scored once.
Freshman
Kendra Cole posted a career-high four caused turnovers in the game, while five different Falcons caused one turnover. The last time an NDC opponent turned the ball over at least 26 times was March 17, 2019.
Notre Dame begins conference play on March 26, when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan College. That game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
