Multiple Falcons step up during Notre Dame's first win; NDC and D&E split MEC opener

ELKINS, W.Va. – A trio of Falcons enjoyed multi-hit games during Notre Dame College's (1-10, 1-1 MEC) first win of the 2023 season. NDC found their groove at an opportune time, as the Falcons defeated the Davis & Elkins Senators (1-13, 1-1 MEC) 7-1 on Monday afternoon to open up Mountain East Conference play. In game two, D&E came from behind to beat NDC 3-2, ensuring a series split.

The Falcons got the scoring started early, posting three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Following an Alec Mendoza single, Hayden Parker drove home Caden Gomes who reached on an error, giving NDC a 1-0 lead. Next, Nate Miller followed suit with an RBI single of his own, plating Mendoza (2-0). Parker would later score an unearned run to give Notre Dame an early 3-0 advantage.

NDC added a pair of runs during the top of the fifth inning to move in front, 5-0. Mendoza led off the frame with a single, and later came around to score on an RBI groundout by Miller (4-0). With two-outs, Devon Minney drove in the fifth run for the Falcons, scoring Johnny Costella.

On the bump, Mendoza held the Senators down the entire game as he dealt a gem for Notre Dame. The redshirt junior tossed a complete game (7.0 IP), allowing one run on four hits, while punching out three Senators and walking one.

Notre Dame tallied two more insurance runs in the sixth inning, earning Mendoza and the Falcons their first win of the season. Parker and Costella produced the RBI for NDC in the frame, highlighted by Costella's triple to left field (7-1).

Leading the way for NDC was Parker who tied a career-high with three hits as the redshirt senior aided Notre Dame to 10 hits as a team. In addition, Parker notched his third career multi-RBI game with two.

Joining the offensive charge was Miller who marked a season-high with a pair of base-knocks, and tied a career-high with two runs batted in (his second multi-RBI game of his career).

Along with a dominant day on the mound, Mendoza also generated a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

In game two, a pitcher's duel broke out, however Notre Dame starting the scoring once again.

NDC posted two runs on three hits during the top of the fourth inning, moving in front 2-0. The Falcons strung together all three hits in a row, as Costella singled, Miller doubled and Schweiger singled to put Notre Dame on top. Both Miller and Schweiger picked up RBI with two-outs in the frame.

The low-scoring affair continued into the final inning until Davis & Elkins rallied for three runs during the home half of the seventh, capitalizing on a pair of Falcon errors to win 3-2.

Starting pitcher Johnny Anservitz tossed a quality outing for Notre Dame, pitching six innings,  allowing one run on two hits, while striking out seven and walking five. The redshirt junior earned a no-decision in game two.

Miller carried his hot bat into the second contest, flashing a 2-for-3 outing with an RBI and a pair of doubles. The sophomore went 4-for-7 with three RBI and two extra-base hits on the day.

Minney also tallied two hits for the Falcons in game two, followed by Schweiger, Costella and Parker with one.
