BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College baseball team (1-12, 1-3 MEC) continued their road trip through the Mountain East Conference on Tuesday afternoon with a stop at West Virginia Wesleyan College (7-9, 3-1 MEC). The Falcons fell narrowly 5-4 during both contests.
In game one, the Bobcats started the scoring in the home half of the first inning, tallying one run on three hits to move in front 1-0.
The Falcons responded in the top of the third inning with two runs on two hits to claim the lead 2-1. Following a walk by
Maximilian Schweiger,
Johnathan Cook roped an RBI double to left field, tying the game at 1-1. A few batters later,
Hayden Parker delivered a two-out RBI single to left field, scoring Cook and giving NDC the 2-1 advantage.
WV Wesleyan answered in the bottom of the third inning, generating four runs on three hits, including a three-run home run to left (5-2).
Notre Dame continued to fight during the top of the fifth inning, as redshirt junior
Alec Mendoza came up in the clutch for NDC. The third baseman hit a two-out, two-run single to left, his 12
th career multi-RBI game, bringing the Falcons to within one run (5-4).
Despite a pair of late hits for Notre Dame, WVWC secured the first contest, 5-4.
As a team, NDC totaled seven hits, paced by Parker's 2-for-4 outing. The Warren, Ohio native now has three multi-hit games this season.
In game two, the Bobcats got the scoring started once again during the home half of the first inning on an RBI single to left field (1-0).
The Falcons answered the call during the top of the third inning as
Damion Legaspe singled home
Johnny Costella after a leadoff walk (1-1). In the game, Costella totaled three base on balls, tied for the second-most in a game in NDC program history.
Next, WVWC posted four runs on four hits during the bottom of the third inning, to reclaim a 5-1 advantage.
Notre Dame went back to work during the top of the sixth inning, producing three runs on three hits (5-4). Mendoza led off the frame with a single, and later scored after
Nate Miller hit his third double in as many games (5-2). A few batters later, Schweiger poked a two-out, two-run double to left field, scoring a pair of Falcons and cutting the WVWC lead to one (5-4).
The Falcons threatened in the top of the seventh inning, as Cook drew a leadoff walk before stealing second base. Despite having a runner in scoring position with zero outs, NDC was unable to break through, falling 5-4 in game two.
Five Falcons recorded a hit in the game, as Schweiger and Miller tallied extra-base hits. In addition, Legaspe, Miller and Schweiger drove home the runs for NDC, as Schweiger generated his second career multi-RBI game.
Notre Dame received quality innings on the mound from reliever
Danny Brammer, who pitched two innings, allowing zero hits, zero runs and zero walks. In addition, right-hander
Cameron Kern also tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Falcons in game two.
The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action on Thursday Mar. 23 at 2 p.m. for the Falcons home opening contest against Lake Erie College. The two sides are slated for a nine-inning bout.
