Notre Dame stays on the road for two games this week

This Week: Notre Dame College women's lacrosse is back from Florida and will travel to North Canton, Ohio, on March 16, to battle Walsh University, at 6 p.m. On March 18, NDC will face No. 7 Regis University, with a start time of 12 p.m. That game will be played at the University of Indianapolis as a neutral site game.

Records: NDC has played three nationally ranked teams already and enter the week with an 0-3 record. Walsh has a mark of 4-2 on the campaign. Regis is 4-0, which includes two wins against nationally ranked teams.
 
Coaches Corner: Ben Morhac enters year number four on the sideline at Notre Dame and has put together a record of 24-15 (16-2 MEC). Erin Smith is the head coach at Walsh and has been on the coaching staff since 2019. At Regis, Sarah Kellner is in her 17th season at Regis, with a coaching record of 177-70.

Rankings: Regis is No. 7 in Division II, according to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) top 25 poll.
 
Series History: The Falcons are 2-6 all-time against Walsh University, first meeting in 2013. NDC has never played Regis University.
 
Noting the Falcons: Last week, Notre Dame went to Florida to battle No. 15 Flagler College and No. 2 Florida Southern College. They fell to FC, 18-7, and FSC, 20-7. Kendal Johnson led the team with six total goals, scoring four times against Florida Southern. Grace Rotter totaled nine draw controls, including six against Flagler.
 
Piper Hammond is 17th in the country with 2.33 caused turnovers per game. In total, she has seven through three games. Hammond also leads the team with 10 draw controls. Joselyn Storm and Grace Rotter have each won nine draws. Kendal Johnson leads the team with six goals, while Storm has three goals and three assists.
 
Noting the Cavaliers: Walsh is coming off of a 17-8 win over McKendree University, on March 14. In that game, WU bookended the game with strong performances. The Cavaliers outscored McKendree 6-1 in the first quarter and 5-1 in the fourth quarter. Chloe Tatlow led the team with four goals, while Isabella Kelty totaled seven points with two goals and five assists. Kelty either scored or assisted on four of the five fourth quarter goals. Goalkeeper Rebekah Bargeron saved nine shots.
 
Prior to the game on Tuesday, Walsh had two very low scoring games, last week. The team defeated Indiana (Pa.), 7-6, in double-overtime. IUP led 4-2 after the first stanza, but only scored two goals the rest of the way. The Cavaliers then defeated Davenport, 8-7, after Rachel Black scored the winning goal with 8:40 to go in the game. The WU goalkeepers totaled 26 saves and allowed just 13 goals over those two games.
 
Walsh has three players who have scored 10 goals, or more. Lindsay Hindman has scored 14 goals, Melinda Maers has 13 goals and Katie Coomes has totaled 10 goals. As a team, WU has 39 assists and Isabella Kelty leads the way with 16 assists to go along with eight goals. Kelty is top 30 in NCAA Division II in both total assists and assists per game. Mallory Miller leads the team with 30 draw controls and nine caused turnovers. Rebekah Bargeron and Kathleen Mendenhall have nearly split time in goal, and average 8.31 goals allowed per game. Mendenhall is eighth in the country in save percentage (55-percent).
 
As a team, WU is third in Division II with a save percentage of 59-percent, 20th in free position percentage, at 52.6-percent and 21st in goals allowed per game, at 8.31.
 
Noting the Rangers: Regis did not play last week, but played three times two weeks ago. On Feb. 28, the Rangers defeated Rockhurst (17-9), on March 2, they defeated Missouri Western State (11-7) and on March 5, they beat No. 10 Grand Valley State (14-10). In the win over nationally ranked GVSU, RU outscored the Lakers 7-1 in the second quarter. They had three players (Lucy Johnson, Bailey Truex, Lily Ferguson) who each scored three goals. Ferguson won a team-high nine draw controls and goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch saved nine shots against Grand Valley.
 
This season, Regis is averaging 14.3 goals per game. Lily Ferguson and Lucy Johnson are at the top of the team with 11 goals, each. Ferguson is third in the country with a free position percentage of 83.3-percent. Her and Madeline Schallmoser are tied for 17th in Division II, with 1.25 free position goals per game. Three players have won at least 10 draw controls, with Ferguson leading the way at 20, Bailey Truex in second at 16 and Gabby Rothermund is third with 10. Schallmoser has caused nine turnovers.
 
The team is ninth in NCAA D2 in caused turnovers per game (13.25), 11th in free position percentage (57.6-percent) and 24th in average scoring margin, at plus-five.
