CLERMONT, Fla. – To wrap up the spring break trip, Notre Dame College had solid pitching and timely hitting in game one, defeating Millersville University, 4-2. In the final game of the day, the Falcons ran into No. 7 ranked Grand Valley State University, and fell by a score of 15-0.
Right away, Notre Dame went to work at the plate against Millersville. In the top of the first inning, junior
Katelyn DeWeese walked and sophomore
Emma Gumont tripled to score the run. The cleanup hitter,
Ella Collinsworth, hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Gumont, giving Notre Dame a 2-0 advantage. Millersville responded with a run in the bottom of the first, but neither team scored again until the fifth.
In the top of the fifth inning, graduate student
Alexi Maciejowski led off with a single and then freshman
Lindsay Breuer reached first with a base hit. With two on, and nobody out, freshman
Danielle Fick doubled to score Maciejowski. Pinch-runner
Kelly Troup attempted to score on the play, but was tagged out at the plate. Millersville remained on the Falcons' heels by scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 3-2.
Junior
Madison Olszewski pinch hit and led off the seventh inning. She came through with her first hit of the season and then stole second to get into scoring position. Maciejowski put down a bunt in an attempt to move the runner up, but a throwing error allowed the Falcons' center fielder to reach base and Olszewski to score.
Leading 4-2, Notre Dame brought on freshman
Grace Fisher to close the door on the Marauders in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore
Allison Weilnau was the starting pitcher for NDC and went six innings, striking out seven hitters and getting the win.
MU was threatening in the bottom of the seventh, using a one-out walk and single to put the tying run on first base. Fisher was able to finish the game and picked up her first career save.
With the victory, NDC extended its win streak to three games. Gumont went 2-for-3 in the game, with an RBI, while Fick and Collinsworth both tallied an RBI, as well.
In game two, Notre Dame faced its third nationally ranked team of the Florida trip. No. 7 Grand Valley State got on the board right away. The Lakers put up two runs in the first inning and two more in the third.
The Falcons trailed by just four runs, until the sixth inning, but could not get a run on the board. They had a base runner in both the first inning and second inning, but only one more from the third inning, on.
GVSU opened up for three runs in the sixth inning and eight more in the seventh to close the game.
DeWeese and Maciejowski both had a hit. Maciejowski was caught stealing, marking the first time that a Falcon has been caught on the bases this season. The team is 14-for-15 on stolen base attempts.
NDC will travel to Pennsylvania, on March 16, to play Mercyhurst University, at 3 and 5 p.m.
