ERIE, Pa. – Notre Dame College showed off its offense prowess in game one, putting up five runs in the sixth inning, and scoring eight total runs in a comeback 8-7 win over Mercyhurst University. In game two, Mercyhurst scored runs consistently throughout the contest and won 10-2, in five innings. Freshman
Danielle Fick had a double and a home run over the two games, while freshman
Lindsay Breuer totaled three hits in games one.
In the first contest of the day, five Falcons had multi-hit games. Mercyhurst scored two runs in the first inning, but the Falcons responded, as they would throughout the entire game. Junior
Meadow Odum singled in the top of the second inning and advanced to second on the throw. She stole third and then came home on an RBI groundout by senior
Emily Marsh.
MU's Allison Dejidas hit a solo home run in the third inning and then belted a three-run home run in the fourth. Heading into the fifth inning, the Lakers led the Falcons, 6-2.
Fick led off the top of the fifth with a double for NDC and would come around to score on the first of sophomore
Emma Gumont's three RBI of the game.
Still trailing by three runs in the sixth inning, the Falcons continued to fight back. Graduate student
Alexi Maciejowski started moving the momentum toward Notre Dame with a leadoff home run over the fence in left-center field. Odum, who had two hits in the game, doubled to left-center and moved to third on a groundout. Breuer, who had three hits and two RBI in the game, singled up the middle to score Odum and make the score 6-5, in favor of Mercyhurst. With one out, pinch-hitter
Mia Cipriano walked and the Lakers made a pitching change with two runners on base.
A passed ball moved the runners up and a walk loaded the bases, before pinch-hitter
Alyssa Wahl singled to tie the game at six. Then, Gumont came up clutch with a single to left field to score both runners and give NDC an 8-6 lead. Sophomore
Ella Collinsworth doubled and Gumont moved to third base, but NDC was unable to score another run.
The two-run lead proved to be very important as Mercyhurst scored in the bottom of the seventh. The Lakers' led off with a double and a runner reaching on an error. But, NDC's pitcher
Madison Olszewski would get the next two outs. A sacrifice fly scored one run, but that would be all MU would get.
Olszewski went 3 2/3 important innings of relief to end the game and earned the win.
In the second game of the day, Mercyhurst's offense took off. They scored a run in the first inning and then added three runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings.
The Falcons had four hits in the game and one of them was a home run. Fick launched her first collegiate home run over the fence for two RBI in the top of the fifth inning.
Notre Dame will host West Liberty University, on March 20. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
