This Week: Notre Dame College women's lacrosse gets back on the field to start the 2023 season, on March 1. The Falcons will be on the road, taking on No. 7 University of Indianapolis, with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
Records: Notre Dame is coming off of another successful season, going 10-6 (7-1 MEC) and winning its second consecutive Mountain East Conference Championship. UIndy has already gotten off to a 4-0 start this season. In 2022, the Greyhounds went 22-1 and defeated East Stroudsburg for the NCAA Division II National Championship.
Coaches Corner: Ben Morhac enters year number four on the sideline at Notre Dame. He has turned the program around since arriving in South Euclid and has put together a record of 24-12 (16-2 MEC). Elaine Jones is in her first season as head coach at the University of Indianapolis.
Rankings: UIndy is currently ranked No. 7 in Division II, according to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) top 25 poll.
Series History: NDC and UIndy have matched up in non-conference play every year since the 2020 campaign. The Greyhounds are 3-0.
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame ended last season riding a five-game win streak, outscoring opponents 110-27 during that run. NDC recorded the program's first shutout when they defeated Davis & Elkins, 22-0, in the MEC Semifinals and then held off Frostburg State in the MEC Championship game, with a 17-15 victory.
Megan Dano is back for her senior season after scoring 23 goals last season and led the team with 25 assists. She was also at the top of the team with a shot-on-goal percentage of 86.1-percent.
Charlotte Vari was near the top of the team with 23 goals and 15 assists. Both Dano and Vari were named All-MEC Honorable Mention.
Piper Hammond and
Joselyn Storm both made an impact on both sides of the field as freshmen in 2022. Hammond led the team in ground balls (39) and caused turnovers (28) and totaled 24 goals and 15 assists, on the offensive side, with a shot-on-goal percentage of 85-percent. Storm had 23 goals and 15 assists, while causing 19 turnovers. Hammond earned All-MEC First Team honors and Storm earned Second Team honors.
The Falcons will look to replace the 92 combined goals from
Emileigh Scott and
Ebony Reddick. Scott also won 180 groundballs and broke the program, and MEC, record.
Mackenzie Levine, who had been a mainstay in goal for the past two seasons, has graduated as well.
Noting the Greyhounds: This season, UIndy is averaging 17 goals each game and has outscored its opponents by an average of 13.25 goals. Quinn Malcolm leads the team with 15 goals and 14 assists, while Joey Fowler is not far behind with 14 goals of her own. Mekayla Montgomery has won 30 draw controls. In goal, Audrey Moran has stopped 19 shots and has a save percentage of 55.9-percent.
In the team's latest game, a 13-3 win over Lee University, on Saturday, Olivia Bladon led the way with four goals and Quinn Malcolm added three goals and four assists. Audrey Moran saved nine shots.
