NDC pitching combines for 22 strikeouts as team gets first win of season

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Notre Dame College started the season by showing off its pitching prowess. In the first game of the day, a 1-0 loss to Cedarville University, freshman Grace Fisher struck out ten hitters in a complete game. In game two, sophomore Allison Weilnau struck out 12 hitters in a complete game shutout as the Falcons defeated Kentucky Wesleyan College, 3-0.

The offense for both teams struggled early in game one. Cedarville was shut down by Fisher, who dominated in the circle. She had a perfect game going through three innings and had struck out five. Cedarville's Dana Bertke collected her team's first hit to lead off the fourth inning. The only run of the game came in the fifth inning, when Casey Bertke hit an RBI infield single.

Fisher (0-1) ended the game allowing just one run on four hits, striking out 10 and she did not walk a hitter.

In game two, Kentucky Wesleyan was threatening in the first inning. The Panthers had back-to-back singles and then a two-out walk loaded the bases. Weilnau began to settle in as she got out of the inning by striking out Kennedy Matheis.

Including the final out in the first, Weilnau would sit down 14 consecutive batters.

The leadoff walk came back to hurt Kentucky Wesleyan, three times. Sophomore Ella Collinsworth earned a free pass to start the fifth and she would move to second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a groundout. Junior Katelyn DeWeese then drove her in with an infield single. DeWeese had two hits in the game.

Sophomore Emma Gumont walked to start the sixth and freshman Danielle Fick came up next and singled. With two out, Collinsworth dropped a single into left to bring Gumont home.

Weilnau had to work out of a jam in the sixth inning, and she did. A base hit, a wild pitch and another single gave Kentucky Wesleyan runners on the corners. The Falcons' starting pitcher got a strikeout and a pop fly to end the inning.

Once again, a leadoff walk put junior Meadow Odum on first and a sac bunt moved her to second. She went to third on a wild pitch and Gumont recorded an RBI single to right field.

Weilnau threw a complete game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out a career-high 12 batters, which is tied for the third highest amount of K's in a single game in program history.

In the field, NDC did not commit an error in either game.

Tomorrow, the Falcons wrap up their time at the Blue Bridge Classic and will play Ashland, at 11 a.m., and Quincy, at 1 p.m.
