Softball spits Saturday with Ashland and Quincy

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Back in action for the second consecutive day, the Notre Dame College softball team (2-2) entertained Ashland University (1-6) and Quincy University (3-6) in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Graduate student Alexi Maciejowski tallied three hits and three RBI, while senior Emily Marsh registered a home run in the 7-2 victory over AU. A pitcher's duel in game two, went to Quincy 3-0.
 
Notre Dame got the scoring started in the third inning of game one, as junior Katelyn DeWeese led off with a single to third base. After a Meadow Odum sacrifice bunt, sophomore Emma Gumont roped an RBI double to right center field, plating DeWeese and giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
 
NDC kept the momentum going into the fourth inning with a two-run home run over left center field via Marsh (3-0).
 
Freshman Danielle Fick and Maciejowski exchanged back-to-back doubles, increasing the NDC advantage to 4-0 in the fifth. After Fick found the left center gap, the Macedonia, Ohio native poked a ball to right field to driving  her in
 
The Golden Eagles cut the Falcons lead in half during the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of runs (4-2).
 
The Falcons added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. DeWeese led the inning off with a walk, followed by Odum reaching on an error. Later in the frame, Fick drew another walk to load the bases for Maciejowski. Then the Nordonia High School product registered a two-run single to center field (6-2). Lastly, freshman Lindsay Breuer drove home the final Falcon on an RBI groundout to second (7-2).
 
For the second consecutive day to begin her collegiate career, freshman Grace Fisher tossed a complete game. The Riverside High School product allowed two runs on five hits, to go along with five strikeouts and zero walks. The Painsville, Ohio native has now started her career with 15 punchouts and zero walks allowed over the aforementioned two complete games.
 
Offensively, NDC posted eight hits, led by veteran Maciejowski's 3-for-4 day at the plate, including three RBI. She was joined by Gumont's pair of hits including a double, as Maciejowski, Fick and Marsh also generated extra-base hits in the game.
 
In the second game of the day, a pitcher's duel ensued with just three total hits over the first three and a half innings.
 
Despite the pitching, Katelyn DeWeese and the Falcons threatened early with a leadoff double in the bottom of the first inning. Following a sacrifice bunt by Meadow Odum, advancing DeWeese to third, NDC was unable to capitalize on the early opportunity.
 
The Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with an unearned run (1-0).
 
Quincy extended their advantage to 3-0 in the top of the sixth inning with two runs on three hits.
 
Despite a leadoff single by Danielle Fick in the bottom of the seventh inning, NDC fell 3-0 to QU to close out the weekend.
 
Offensively, DeWeese, Fick and Marsh grabbed hits for Notre Dame in game two, as DeWeese posted the lone extra-base hit.
 
On the mound, sophomore Allison Weilnau tossed 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits, to go with two strikeouts and two walks allowed. Junior Madison Olszewski added 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and one walk, while striking out one.
 
The Notre Dame College softball team will be back in action on Saturday Mar. 4 as the Falcons fly South for their annual Spring break trip. While in Clermont, Fla. NDC will play 10 games, beginning with a doubleheader against Washburn University and Dominican University of New York beginning at 2 p.m.
