SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Scoring in double figures for the fourth consecutive game and registering a double-double for the second time in three outings, freshman
Noel Weathers continued to impress for the Notre Dame College women's basketball team (6-19, 5-14 MEC) on Wednesday evening. Despite, the Cincinnati, Ohio native's game-high 17 points and career-high 12 rebounds, the Falcons narrowly fell 59-55 to the University of Charleston (20-5, 15-4 MEC) inside Murphy Gymnasium.
A slow start to the contest featured UC with a 15-9 lead after one.
Charleston maintained their advantage to a 24-16, with 2:49 left to play in the half. Next, Notre Dame went on an 8-0 run to close out the stanza, sophomore
Karli Anker highlighted the run with a corner three off a pass by
Amil Ali-Shakir. The score was knotted at 24-24 at the break.
A back and forth third quarter featured six lead changes over the 10-minute span. After trailing, 32-27, NDC regained the advantage 33-32, following a layup by
Marina Adachi on an assist from
Cencere McDaniel. The Golden Eagles concluded the period on an 11-4 run, to lead 43-37.
Charleston extended their lead to 51-43 with 5:51 left to play, however the Falcons were not done fighting. NDC pulled the contest to within one possession (57-55) under a minute remaining after a pair of free throws by Weathers. UC ultimately closed the contest out to win 59-55.
As aforementioned, Weathers paced NDC on the night with her fourth career double-double, flashing a game-high 17 points and tying her career-high with 12 boards.
Junior
Lizzie Imrie chipped in 14 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Ali-Shakir contributed eight points, four rebounds and tied her career-high with a game-high five assists.
Freshman
Cencere McDaniel tied her career-high by cleaning five boards.
As a team, Notre Dame shot 22-53 (41.5%) from the floor, 1-12 (8.3%) from three and 10-16 (62.5%) from the free throw line.
The Notre Dame College women's basketball team will hit the road and be back in action at West Virginia State University on Saturday Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.
