ELKINS, W.Va. – Notre Dame College and Davis & Elkins College were separated by no more than seven points through the first 15 minutes of the contest, but D&E went on a run with less than five minutes to go in the first half and took a large lead into halftime. That set the tone for the Senators to grab a 102-79 victory, on Wednesday.
The Falcons were locked in after the opening tipoff, as junior
Andre Harris pushed the ball down the court and passed it over to junior
RJ Ogom, under the basket, for a dunk to put NDC on the board. On the next possession, Harris grabbed an offensive rebound, which led to a layup by senior
Davin Zeigler. Zeigler made his first appearance, and start, of the season, on Wednesday.
From the beginning of the game, until the 5:54-mark in the first half, the teams traded the lead seven times.
Notre Dame went 8-for-9 at the free throw line in the first half and showed off the impressive shooting from the stripe, early on. Ogom made two free throws to give NDC a 6-2 lead. D&E went on a 5-0 run, but the Falcons took advantage of back-to-back turnovers by the Senators, which resulted in layups by sophomore
Devin Haid and freshman
Cameron Johnson.
One minute later, Haid was fouled behind the three-point line and sunk all three shots to give NDC a 13-11 lead with 13:50 on the clock. D&E missed a shot and Johnson sunk a three on the other end to push Notre Dame's lead to five, 16-11, in what turned out to be its largest lead of the game.
A 12-0 run by Davis & Elkins put the Senators ahead by seven, 23-16, at the 10:32-mark in the first half. But, NDC bounced right back as Ogom, senior
Trent Williams and junior
Gbolahan Adio hit three consecutive 3-pointers to tie the game at 25. Ogom sank two free throws and the Falcons held a 27-25 lead.
The Senators began moving the ball around to find an open shot and they went up and down the floor quickly. In the final 6:33 of the first stanza, D&E put together a 23-6 run and led, 50-35, at halftime. Ogom led the way with nine points in the first half, but, as a team the Falcons shot just 31-percent from the field.
With just under 16 minutes to play in the second half, D&E had expanded its lead to 21 points, 63-42. The Falcons fought back as Haid quickly cut to the hoop on a fastbreak layup. Zeigler then stole the ball from the Senators on two consecutive possessions, leading to points after each. After the first, he took the ball down and sunk a three and, after the second, he sent the ball to sophomore
Jevontae Jones, who made a layup. NDC closed the gap to 14, 63-49.
Zeigler stole the ball four times in the second half and totaled seven in the game, which is tied for the second most in program history.
Notre Dame closed the gap to 14 a couple times in the final 10 minutes, but could not get any closer.
Haid had 12 points in the second stanza and ended the contest with a team-leading 17. Haid went 8-for-8 at the free throw line and Ogom went 6-for-6, as the team made 21 free throws.
The Falcons will be back home for the first time in the month of December when they welcome West Virginia Wesleyan College to the Murphy Gymnasium, on Dec. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
