TAKOMA PARK, Md. – Closing out the trip to the Washington, D.C. area, Notre Dame College scored 57 second half points and were led in several categories by
Davin Zeigler to secure a 100-89 victory over Washington Adventist University, on Monday.
The Falcons were active early in the contest, as junior
Gbolahan Adio stole the ball from WAU, on the Shock's second possession of the game. That would lead to a tip-in layup by sophomore
Jevontae Jones. Zeigler then made his presence known, sinking the first three of the game, at the 17:11-mark, and then made a layup a minute and-a-half later.
By the end of the game, Zeigler led the team in points (16), rebounds (7) and assists (5). That set a new season-high in points and rebounds, in just his fourth game of the year.
NDC began to extend its lead when freshman
Cameron Johnson broke a 7-7 tie with a layup. He was fouled and would make the free throw. The Falcons forced another miss on the defensive end and then Zeigler took the ball down the floor and found junior
RJ Ogom for a three to give NDC a 13-7 lead, with 15 minutes to go in the half.
The lead was pushed to double-digits by the Falcons when Ogom knocked down another shot from long range and Zeigler found his way to the bucket for a layup, with 9:09 on the clock, giving NDC a 26-15 advantage.
Sophomore
Devin Haid and freshman
Robbie Cass both knocked down a three for a 6-0 run. After Johnson made two more free throws, the Falcons held their largest lead of the first half, going ahead by 17, 34-17.
At the halftime break, Notre Dame led, 43-33. NDC shot 47-percent from the field in the first half and made four more three pointers than the Shock. The Falcons outrebounded Washington Adventist, 20-14, as well.
In the opening stages of the second half, the Falcons led by ten points, 47-37, after Adio stole the ball and Haid put it up and in from close range on the offensive side. However, WAU went on a 5-0 run and closed the gap to five points, 47-42, after Michael Brown knocked down a 3-pointer, with 16:24 remaining in the game.
Immediately, after the Shock put five unanswered points on the scoreboard, a technical foul was called on the home team. The Falcons took advantage as Haid made a free throw and Zeigler cut to the basket for another layup.
Then, NDC went cold on offense and did not make a basket from the 16:04-mark, until the 13:30-mark. WAU's Mohamed Bundu put together a personal 5-0 run and Washington Adventist trailed by three, 50-47. The Falcons needed a spark and got it from senior
Trent Williams as he knocked down a three, which started a 9-0 NDC run. He also capped the run, with a second triple, two minutes later.
Williams scored all 15 of his points in the second half. Prior to Monday, he had not scored more than seven points in a contest.
Johnson grabbed an offensive board and put the ball back into the hoop. On the next possession, Zeigler ran down the floor and dumped the ball off to Johnson for a transition layup. The Falcons led by 14 points, 63-49, with 10:28 remaining.
Johnson tied a career-high with 12 points, to go along with five rebounds.
The basket then began to open up and the Falcons were on fire from 3-point range. Junior
Joshua Dames and Williams hit back-to-back threes and, just 30 seconds later, Williams passed to Ogom for a triple.
As a team, NDC connected on a season-high 13 three-point baskets and finished with a season-best 48-percent 3-point percentage.
Williams made two free throws, following another technical foul, before Haid found an opening for a dunk. At the 7:09-mark, NDC led 76-55.
The onslaught continued as another tech was called on WAU and Williams made two more free throws. Junior
Andre Harris was hit as he made a layup, and after making the free throw, NDC led by 25, 81-56.
To its credit, Washington Adventist did not go away, and over the final 6:12 of the game, the Shock began to swing the momentum. A 13-2 run trimmed the NDC lead to 14, 83-69.
For NDC, Adio connected on a three and junior
Jamarr Talbert Jr. made a pair of free throws, but, after that, WAU put together another 13-4 run and closed within 10 points, 92-82, with 2:04 on the clock.
Washington Adventist caused several turnovers down the stretch and got to the basket on the offensive end. With three consecutive layups by WAU, along with an and-one free throw after a foul, the Falcons' led by just seven points, 96-89, with 35-seconds to go.
Notre Dame was able to make enough free throws in the final minute to stay ahead of the Shock and grab a third consecutive victory.
The Falcons had 52 bench points, outrebounded WAU, 38-30, and had seven more assists than the Shock. Along with Williams' 15 points in the second half, Haid and Adio each had eight in the final 20 minutes. Haid finished with 13 points and Adio had 11. Ogom added 13 points and five rebounds and Harris had six points and six rebounds.
Monday's contest is the first game that the Falcons have had six players score in double-digits this season and the first time since Jan. 30, 2023.
Notre Dame will come home and host D'Youville University, on Dec. 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
