SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame College women's basketball team welcomed No. 19 Glenville State into Murphy Gymnasium on Wednesday evening. The Falcons played until the final whistle, before falling 86-75 to the Pioneers. Juniors
Karli Anker and
Lilee Carlson posted productive outings, as Anker touted a season-high 15 points, career-high nine rebounds and a career-high six assists, alongside Carlson's 12 points, four rebounds, season-high six assists, career-high five steals and career-high three blocks.
Carlson and
Kennadi Harris kicked off the scoring for the Falcons, as NDC trailed 5-4 with 7:13 to play in the first quarter. Glenville State took over the remainder of the first period, going on a 22-9 run, to lead 27-13 after the first ten minutes of play.
The Falcons battled back in the second quarter, producing a quick 6-0 run to begin the stanza, and cut the GSU lead to eight (27-19). A pair of
Hayley St. John layups, followed by a Harris basket, gathered the momentum back for NDC at the 8:31 mark. The two sides exchanged scores into the halftime break, as GSU led 42-34 following a 21-15 frame in favor of the Falcons.
Immediately into the third quarter,
Noel Weathers pulled NDC to within five points at 42-37. However, Glenville State answered with a 14-2 run to reclaim a 56-39 lead with 6:11 remaining in the third. Once again Notre Dame continued to fight, producing a 14-4 spurt, capped off by four free throws from
Izabella Zirzow and
Cencere McDaniel (60-53) with 1:32 left in the frame. GSU took the third quarter 23-19 and carried a 65-53 edge into the final 10 minutes of play.
Glenville State stretched their advantage to 78-58 at the midway point in the fourth quarter. However, Notre Dame did not give up, as the Falcons instantly generated a 13-2 run, fueled by six Anker points in the spree. NDC moved back within single digits at 80-71 with 1:33 left to play. Despite a valiant effort which saw Notre Dame take the fourth quarter 22-21, Glenville State earned the win, 86-75.
As aforementioned, Anker enjoyed a career-day, posting 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists to lead the team in each category. Carlson also stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, four rebounds, six assists, five steals and three blocks.
Rachel Richardson chipped in 10 points, as McDaniel and St. John tallied nine apiece, while Zirzow totaled a career-high eight.
On the glass, Weathers (8) and St. John (6) joined the cause, as Anker, McDaniel and
Mallory Hullinger aided Carlson on the defensive side of the ball with two steals apiece.
Notre Dame shot 28-55 (50.9%) from the floor, 1-12 (8.3%) from three and 18-24 (75.0%) from the free throw line. The Falcons secured 43 rebounds, 17 assists, 14 steals and four blocks.
Glenville State shot 28-83 (33.7%) from the field, 10-43 (23.3%) from three and 20-32 (62.5%) from the charity stripe. The Pioneers added 45 rebounds, 13 assists, 21 steals and one block.
The contest was up-tempo for the entire 40 minutes, as the two sides combined for 67 turnovers and 51 fouls called.
The Notre Dame College women's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. as the Falcons head to Concord University.
